Benue State Mourns as Head of Service, Agbogbo Ode, Passes Away

MAKURDI, NIGERIA – The Benue State Government has officially announced the passing of the State Head of Service, Dr. Agbogbo Ode.

The veteran technocrat reportedly passed away in the early hours of Saturday, May 2, 2026, following a brief illness. He was receiving medical attention at a hospital in Makurdi at the time of his death.

A Career of Service
Dr. Ode was appointed to the position by Governor Hyacinth Alia on May 31, 2023, shortly after the current administration took office. During his tenure, he was credited with spearheading several reforms aimed at digitizing civil service records and improving the welfare of state workers.

Prior to becoming the Head of Service, Dr. Ode had a long and distinguished career in the state’s bureaucracy, serving in various capacities across multiple ministries.

Government Reaction
In a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dcns. Serumun Deborah Aber, the government described Dr. Ode’s death as a “monumental loss” to the state.

“Dr. Ode was an impeccable professional and a seasoned administrator who dedicated his life to institutional excellence,” the statement read. “His leadership and wisdom will be deeply missed by the entire Benue State Civil Service.”

Mourning and Transitions
Flags at the State Secretariat in Makurdi are expected to fly at half-mast as a mark of respect for the late official. Governor Alia, currently on official duty, is expected to visit the bereaved family later today to offer his condolences.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, as the state government remains in consultation with the Ode family.
