ABUJA – The All Progressives Congress (APC) has effectively signaled the start of its 2027 re-election campaign by granting President Bola Tinubu an automatic waiver from the party’s mandatory screening process.
The decision, made public on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, means the President will not be required to appear before any screening panel, a move that essentially guarantees his clearance to seek the party’s ticket for a second term.
The “Right of First Refusal”
By waiving the screening requirement, the APC leadership has underscored its confidence in the President’s “Renewed Hope” agenda. Sources within the National Working Committee (NWC) suggest the move is intended to avoid unnecessary administrative hurdles for the incumbent and to present a united front long before the primary season officially begins.
While the move is seen as a standard “incumbency perk” in some political circles, it serves as a formal endorsement of Tinubu’s leadership over the past three years. This “automatic clearance” effectively shuts the door on any internal debate regarding his eligibility or fitness to fly the party’s flag in the 2027 general elections.
Internal Unity or Strategic Lockdown?
Political analysts view this development as a strategic maneuver to stabilize the party and discourage high-ranking challengers from within. By clearing the path for Tinubu this early, the APC is positioning itself to focus entirely on its national governance record rather than internal primary battles.
“The decision is a testament to the stability within the party,” said a high-ranking APC official. “It allows the President to focus on the business of governance without the distraction of a grueling internal screening process.”
The Road to the Convention
Despite the waiver, the President is still expected to undergo the formal nomination process at the party’s national convention. However, with the screening hurdle removed, the process is now widely seen as a coronation rather than a contest.
As the political atmosphere in Nigeria begins to shift toward the next election cycle, the APC’s early move has sent a clear message to both the opposition and internal factions: the ruling party has already chosen its captain for the 2027 voyage.
