ILORIN – A wave of terror has swept through the Kemanji community in Kwara State following a deadly early-morning raid by armed bandits that left several people dead, including personnel of the Nigerian Army.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, followed weeks of tension after the bandits reportedly sent advance warnings to the community of an impending strike. Despite the deployment of security forces to the area, the gunmen launched a coordinated assault that resulted in a fierce and prolonged gun battle.

A Community Under Siege

According to local sources, the attackers arrived in large numbers, wielding sophisticated weapons and catching the community off-guard. While soldiers stationed in the area moved to repel the invasion, the sheer volume of the assault led to casualties within the military ranks.

“They came before dawn, just as they threatened they would,” said one resident who managed to escape to a neighboring village. “The soldiers fought bravely, but the bandits seemed to know exactly where to hit. Many people have been killed, and we don’t even know the final count yet.”

Mass Exodus

The aftermath of the attack has triggered a humanitarian crisis as hundreds of residents have begun fleeing Kemanji and surrounding settlements. Fearing that the bandits may return to consolidate their hold on the area, families are abandoning their homes and livestock, seeking refuge in larger towns and the state capital.

The “terrible confusion” described by national observers appears to have taken root in Kwara, a state that has traditionally been seen as a “bridge of peace” between the North and South. The targeting of soldiers alongside civilians highlights a growing trend of audacity among bandit groups operating in the North-Central region.

Security Response

The Kwara State Police Command and the military high command have reportedly drafted reinforcements to the axis to restore order and track the fleeing insurgents. While the exact casualty figures remain unconfirmed by official sources, the mood in the state remains tense.

“We are working to secure the area and provide a safe corridor for those who have been displaced,” a security official stated under the condition of anonymity. “The loss of our men in the line of duty is a heavy blow, but the operation to flush out these elements is ongoing.”

Growing Concerns

Analysts warn that the attack on Kemanji represents a significant breach of the state’s security perimeter. The fact that the attackers successfully carried out their threat despite prior warnings has raised serious questions regarding the effectiveness of local intelligence gathering and the speed of military response in rural outposts.

As at press time, the Kwara State Government has not issued an official statement, but emergency services are reportedly being mobilized to assist the displaced persons currently scattered across the region.
