The National Union of Teachers, Ebonyi state Chapter has called on government to adequately monitor the Teaching profession, to ensure protection and fulfillment of the right of every child to education.

Ebonyi state Chairman, National Union of Teachers, NUT, Comrade Ekechi Francis Okorie, made the call in Abakaliki, on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day celebration.

Comrade Ekechi who noted that the Union is not unaware of the fact that the National Policy on Education, NPE provides for participations of Private Providers of education to complement the efforts of Public providers. He however condemned the unchecked commercialization of education and activities which he said often trample on the right of both teachers and learners.

Speaking further, the State NUT Chairman while appreciating the laudable achievements of the governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, said the governor has revived their hope for a better tomorrow.

He said, “All along it has been tussle with the Labour and government, but the governor came on board to give us another hope. He is the only governor that is so passionate about teachers.

“He went as far as giving us 65years and 40years elongation, now as a teacher you retire at the age of either 35years or 40years”.

Ekechi equally appealed for the payment of teachers’ promotion arrears, and called on local government Chairmen to prioritize the payment of teachers salary, by making it a first line charge, given the experience of the past administration where teachers were owed salaries for months due to inability of the council to shoulder such responsibility.
