In a remarkable display of law enforcement prowess, the Anambra State Police Command has successfully dismantled a notorious kidnap gang operating in the Anam axis of Anambra West Local Government Area. The gang had been a source of fear and terror in the region, responsible for several high-profile kidnappings.

According to a press statement issued by DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Anambra State Police Command, the breakthrough came on 18th July 2023 when police detectives were alerted to the suspicious activities of one Chukwuebuka Esulo from Ebonyi State. Esulo was attempting to find a buyer for a black Mercedes Benz GLK SUV with registration number BLF 746 EA in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area.

DSP Ikenga noted that what raised the detectives’ suspicion was the fact that the vehicle had been reported as stolen during a kidnapping incident in Aguleri on 26th June 2023. The victim’s family had been subjected to a harrowing experience, being forced to pay a ransom of N4.5 million before their loved one was finally released.

Acting swiftly on the tip-off, the police stormed the scene and apprehended Chukwuebuka Esulo for questioning. Under pressure, the suspect cracked and made a shocking confession – he was, indeed, a member of the notorious kidnap gang. He further disclosed that he was sent from the camp by the gang to sell the stolen Mercedes Benz SUV.

Following this crucial breakthrough, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, promptly ordered the case to be transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Awkuzu. This move proved to be instrumental in the subsequent arrests of other gang members.

Ejeka Ufuo, another member of the gang, aged 23, was successfully apprehended. Ufuo had believed the vehicle had already been sold and brazenly came forward to collect the proceeds.

The police are now intensifying efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the kidnap gang and recover the arsenal of weapons they possess.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, expressed his deep appreciation for the dedication and hard work demonstrated by all personnel involved in the operation. This resounding success is a testament to the effectiveness of the Anambra State Police Command’s efforts in combating crime and ensuring the safety and security of the residents.

As investigations continue, the Command further encouraged the public to provide any relevant information that could aid in the arrest of the remaining members of the kidnap gang.

With the arrest of these criminals and others recently arrested, the people of Anambra can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that their state is a step closer to being rid of the menace of kidnapping.
