Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has confirmed his Deputy Governor, Engr Benson Abounu as his running mate in next year’s general elections.

This is just as members of the Party have pleged to sustain support for Governor Ortom and other candidates of the party to secure victory in the 2019 elections.

Governor Ortom made the announcement today during the extraordinary meeting of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) held in Government House, Makurdi.

Ortom said the announcement became necessary to put to rest the speculation that he might pick another running mate other than Engineer Abounu ahead of next year’s general elections.

Governor Ortom also called on politicians especially those who contested for elective positions to allow the will of God to prevail in their lives rather than insisting that they must have their own way at the detriment of the generality of the Benue people.

The governor announced that there would be elaborate reconciliation programmes for PDP members especially those that contested and lost at the primaries saying it was better to work together.

According to him, the reconciliation team with three persons from each of the senatorial zones in the state would be constituted as part of the party’s integration programme, urging party faithful to live above board.

Governor Ortom thanked all PDP faithful for the warm reception accorded him on his return to the party and requested that the idea of new and old members of PDP should be discarded.

Earlier, Senator David Mark had described governor Ortom as a dependable and reliable ally and assured his of total support and victory come 2019.

He said Governor Ortom boosted his moral by accompanying him to the podium to address delegates at the last PDP convention in Portharcourt making him the only aspirant to have enjoyed such privilege.

Speaking on behalf of PDP governorship aspirants, Prof. David Ker promised to work with Governor Ortom who is the party’s flag bearer, to enable the party clinch power at the general elections come 2019. He also thanked the Party’s leadership for recognising them.

Also speaking, Mrs. Georgina Hundu on behalf of senatorial aspirants, advised the leadership of the party to continue to consult with relevant stakeholders, promising to also support the governor and other candidates.

On their part, Dr. M.Y Omojo for house of representatives and Mr. Jeff Atongu for house of Assembly aspirants, also promised to queue behind  the governor and other PDP candidates to secure victory at the polls.

Dr. Laha Dzever who spoke on behalf of elders said he can confidently attest to the fact that the party has done things correctly this time and prayed that such be sustained for good of the people.

Speaking on behalf of the women, Chief Margaret Icheen advised that the female folk should be given its rightful place in the political landscape of the nation just as the youth through Mr. Sunny Nyior promised to mobilise themselves to support the governor and other candidates of the party.

State Chairman of PDP, Chief John Ngbede announced that winners at the last primaries of the party whose names were purportedly replaced have been retained. He advised all stakeholders to shun any act that could lead to repeat of mistakes of the past.
