In a move aimed at strengthening theΒ capacityΒ ofΒ theΒ PoliceΒ andΒ otherΒ securityΒ agenciesΒ toΒ fight crime in theΒ state,Β Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has directedΒ the 23 LocalΒ GovernmentΒ AreasΒ to purchase 46 SecurityΒ UtilityΒ Vehicles for the securityΒ agenciesΒ in their communities.
Also, theΒ AssistantΒ InspectorΒ General of Police,Β AIG,Β Baba AdisaΒ Bolanta thanked Governor WikeΒ for his entrenched support for the police through logisticsΒ and other investments.
GovernorΒ WikeΒ who announcedΒ theΒ directive while grantingΒ audienceΒ to the AssistantΒ InspectorΒ GeneralΒ of PoliceΒ for Zone 6, Mr BabaΒ AdisaΒ Bolanta, on WednesdayΒ at the GovernmentΒ House,Β Port Harcourt,Β Β said that the decision to provideΒ additionalΒ logisticsΒ for securityΒ agenciesΒ was reachedΒ at the last securityΒ councilΒ meeting.
The governorΒ further declared thatΒ all the Local GovernmentΒ ChairmenΒ have been given specificΒ directives to mobilizeΒ communityΒ support for the police and otherΒ securityΒ agenciesΒ in the move to further reduceΒ crime inΒ theΒ state.
He said: “Anybody arrested in respect of kidnapping, cultism and armed robbery must be prosecuted. I haveΒ directed the CommissionerΒ ofΒ PoliceΒ never to releaseΒ any suspectΒ on the strength of his relationshipΒ withΒ any governmentΒ official or any prominentΒ citizen of the state.
“On no accountΒ shouldΒ the police releaseΒ the suspectsΒ of kidnapping,Β cultismΒ and armed robberyΒ withoutΒ properΒ investigationΒ and prosecution. I have directed the state Attorney-General to ensure that all legal loopholes during prosecution are checked to ensure that suspected criminals are discouraged “.
The governorΒ added thatΒ his administration hasΒ taken deliveryΒ ofΒ two armouredΒ helicopters, pointingΒ outΒ thatΒ theΒ state government has appliedΒ forΒ waiver becauseΒ the helicoptersΒ will beΒ used forΒ securityΒ and not luxuryΒ purposes.
While praising the State Police Commissioner for effectively fighting crime, he urged the police hierarchy to allow the commissioner remain in the state and fight crime.
Earlier,Β AIG Zone 6,Β Β Baba AdisaΒ Bolanta further commended GovernorΒ WikeΒ for mobilizing support in the LocalΒ GovernmentΒ AreasΒ for theΒ policeΒ to fight crime.
He saidΒ securityΒ is an expensiveΒ venture,Β pointingΒ outΒ thatΒ theΒ PoliceΒ will continueΒ toΒ seek more supportΒ from theΒ state government. He said he was in Rivers State for a familiarization visit. The Police Chief noted that an helicopter has been devoted to Rivers,Β AkwaΒ Ibom, Bayelsa and Cross River States by the Inspector General of Police.
He assuredΒ the people ofΒ the state of a crimeΒ free ChristmasΒ andΒ newΒ yearΒ celebration and that the policeΒ had developedΒ new strategiesΒ to check criminality.
It will beΒ recalledΒ thatΒ GovernorΒ WikeΒ had earlierΒ donated 64 Sports UtilityΒ VehiclesΒ to the PoliceΒ andΒ otherΒ securityΒ agencies to aid crime fighting in the State.
