One person was reportedly killed and several others injured following a deadly clash between youths of Asaba, the Delta State capital, and youths of neighbouring community, Ibusa, over ownership of a piece of land.
The clash, 247ureports.com gathered, was said to have occurred at Umuodafe farm, a few meters away from the immigration office along Asaba, Ughelli/Warri express way.
National President of Ibusa Youth Council (IYC), Comrade Alfred Isoh, who spoke to 247ureports.com, decried the action, saying for his intervention, there would have been a full blown war between the warring youths of both communities.
He said “it was on Friday when heavily armed youths from Asaba invaded our beach at Umuodafe Isiuzo, behind the Immigration office, shooting sporadically into the air, and because our people were just carrying out their daily chores to eke out a living, they were unaware when the attackers came.
“Of course, the workers took to their heels but the pail loader operator, Christopher, was not so lucky as the bullet hit him and he died on the spot. Since yesterday, I have been going round to calm down our people, believing that government will intervene but, it seems that government is handicapped as the police have not responded,” he said.
Asked what they intend to do, Comrade Isoh said, “the people of Asaba have been making move to take over the area, we wrote petitions to the police, we relied on the police but, you see that the police cannot protect us, we are watching, tension is high but, for how long? This is where some persons earn their living and we cannot continue to keep silence in the face of attack.
“The body has been deposited in the General Hospital mortuary at Ibusa, the Police is aware of the incident, yet no arrest has been made. Christopher was somebody’s relation, someone’s friend and the land in question is where people work every day to feed, our people wants justice,” he stated.
Attempts to get reactions from youth leaders in Asaba proved abortive as they promised to get detailed information before responding.
