Reports from Port Harcourt, Nigeria says workers and retirees engaged by the Rivers State Government yesterday went on a protest match calling on the Governor, Rotimi Amaechi to pay up their salary arrears before handing over on May 29.

The protest paralyzed activities at the state secretariat yesterday as the government workers turned out massively to demand the immediate payment of their salary arrears.

The protestors included civil servants, retired midwives engaged under the Midwives Special Scheme(MSS) and retirees who have not been paid for 5months.

Our engagement with the protesting workers showed the Rivers State Government under Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, a right hand man to president elect, Gen. Mohamadu Buhari, has not paid salaries to MSS nurses for 20months, is owing state government workers for 2 months and has not paid pensioneers for 5 months.

Protesting workers also said they have not received overheads for 8months.
