Press Statement

It is with great dismay and gross disappointment that, we the Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, on behalf of Igbo nation and lovers of democracy worldwide, hereby cautions the Oba of Lagos who on Easter day debased his throne dabbling into the murky waters of politics threatening the equality of the Igbos in Nigerian nationality, saying, “I am not ready to beg you. Nobody knew how I picked Ambode. Jimi is my blood relation and I told him that he can never be governor in Lagos for now. The future belongs to God. I am not begging anybody, but what you people cannot do in Onitsha, Aba or anywhere you can not do it here. If you do what I want, Lagos will continue to be prosperous for you, if you go against my wish, you will perish in the water.”

This is height of incivility borne out of jittery, and fear of repercussion of the age-long anti-Igbo and anti-social dispositions of the Lagos exclusivity claimants, as judgment day is fast approaching, as per the likely emergence of the first democratically elected Governor of Lagos Dr. Jim Agbaje, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP come April 11, 2015 gubernatorial election.

We wish to remind the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu that has now descended so low playing the ignoble politics of typical Nigeria godfather-politicians that thrive by imposing leaders on people that we are in 21st century and, we are not in his infamous Sani Abacha police service days and should avoid dragging the revered Lagos Oba stool to muds. And if voting freely one’s preferred candidate is good, as he celebrated in the recent victory of his All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Candidate, Gen Muhammdu Buhari, we hereby reminds him that we Igbo are known democrats right before the rise of indirect democracy and are not afraid of any feudal callousness and undemocratic political misfiring, and therefore ask the Igbos in Lagos to vote for those who meant well asking for their votes and nothing will happen.

If Oba of Lagos has spoken for the APC candidate Ambode and his supporters by declaring political and economic terrorism on the Igbos in Lagos if they express their voters’ rights and vote against his Candidate, we advise him not to ignite unnecessary political war between Igbos and Yorubas that have lived well long before his emergence as Oba of Lagos. We hereby, call upon the Igbo, non-Yoruba and moderate Yoruba in Lagos to unanimously vote massively for Dr. Agbaje, who has been begging for their votes and symbolizes democratic alternatives and constitutionalism come April 11 governorship election. How can the same Oba of Lagos who attributed Gen Buhari’s Presidential victory as act of God and electorates trust, saying “It is God who chose him. And God who chose him will be with him. It is God who decided that the outcome of the polls. The trust which Nigerians bestow on him, he must not let them down” chose playing God and Sole Elector when it comes to Lagos governorship election?

We hereby demand unconditional apology from Oba of Lagos on the insults he heaped no Igbo nation and, considers his opinion that of his candidate and APC Lagos or live witnessing protest votes against his Candidate Akiwunmi Ambode from Igbos, non-Yoruba and moderate Yoruba in Lagos, who actually desired “FRESH AIR IN LAGOS” by voting people’s Governor in the waiting Dr. Jimi Agbaje.

We also call upon the Inspector General of Police, Sulieman Abba and President Goodluck Jonathan to call the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu to order to avoid creating inter-ethnic political crises that will not blow anyone good. Igbo nation are waiting, watching and shall return any action against with a commensurate response and bargained political war because some people are already jittery over the likely outcome of Lagos Gubernatorial election. We happily note that Oba of Lagos Akiolu has through  anti-social statements against Igbo electorates in Lagos taken Dr. Agbaje’s Gubernatorial campaign far reaching to Igbos, non-Yoruba in Lagos and the Yorubas and it will likely attract protest votes for Dr. Agbaje.

We hereby note that it is quite interesting that Oba of Lagos, Akiolu has joined the league of those who long to inherit Igbo property in Lagos and therefore, advise that those who want to inherit the shoes of a living person must first go shoeless and Igbo are bourgeoning nationality that nothing will happen to their enterprising spirit, not even the army of nascent Akioluist could turn the tide against. Until otherwise decided, any part of Nigeria belongs to all.

Finally, we advise the Igbo and Yoruba in Lagos and beyond not to allow their selves be dragged into unbargained mutually destructive political war, not good for any. Meanwhile, no one has monopoly of violence.
