JERUSALEM / ABUJA — SEPTEMBER 17, 2026 — A member of the Israeli parliament (Knesset), Afef Abbed, has officially written to the United Nations demanding immediate international review and implementation of UN recommendations regarding the detention of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The correspondence, dated September 1, 2026, was addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the Chair-Rapporteur of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
Call for Follow-Up on UN Opinion No. 25/2022
In the letter, MK Abbed highlighted the findings of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention in its 2022 opinion, which concluded that Kanu’s arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria violated international human rights standards. The UN panel had recommended his immediate release and entitlement to compensation.
Abbed noted that subsequent legal proceedings in Nigeria—including Kanu’s conviction on terrorism charges in late 2025—do not negate the underlying human rights concerns surrounding his initial capture and ongoing detention conditions.
Five-Point Demand to International Community
The Israeli lawmaker urged the UN to take concrete steps regarding the Nigerian government’s compliance with international legal frameworks:
- Request an official update from the Nigerian government regarding measures taken in response to UN Working Group findings.
- Publish a public status report on the implementation of the UN recommendations concerning Kanu’s detention.
- Engage in direct diplomatic dialogue with Nigerian authorities to ensure proceedings align with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
- Maintain continuous monitoring by UN human rights mandate holders regarding Kanu’s health and access to independent medical care.
- Facilitate a lawful, rights-respecting resolution grounded in international due process.
The diplomatic push follows recent engagements in Jerusalem between Israeli lawmakers and an IPOB advocacy delegation, marking an intensified effort by foreign representatives to draw international oversight to the long-running legal battle. Neither the Federal Government of Nigeria nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an official response to the Knesset member’s petition as of press time.
