The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Rivers State Chapter is disturbed over the manner the Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly; Rt. Hon Otelemaba Dan Amachree and the Chief of Staff, Government House, Tony Okocha seem to be playing politics with the life of the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon Rotimi Amaechi.

It is unexpected of the Speaker to, after making a heinous allegation on an alleged plot to assassinate the Governor, turned round to make his claim look empty, spurious and unserious by his latest action to stop the Police from acting to uncover the alleged plot and those behind it.

In a statement issued by the Rivers State ACN Publicity Secretary, Jerry Needam, the Party believes that for the Speaker to go to a Port Harcourt High Court to secure an injunction stopping the Police from inviting him and the Chief of Staff, Tony Okocha, from throwing more light on their allegations of attempt by people to assassinate the Governor of Rivers State clearly exposes the falsehood they have peddled, otherwise, and as supposed, they would have aided by all means, including allowing the security agencies to ensure justice is done by bringing the culprits to book.

We believe life is sacred, and any attempts to take some one’s life should not be treated with levity. It is on this premise that we feel it’s imperative for the Police and other relevant authorities to properly and spiritedly commence investigation into such grievous allegation by those top government officials.

Although, no life is greater than the other, but it is our considered opinion that threats to the life of such a highly placed and prominent personality like the Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi should not be politicized as the Speaker and the Chief of Staff appear to have done by their secured court order, stopping the police from getting at those who wanted the Governor dead.

In as much as the government is statutorily charged with the protection of lives and property of the citizenry, it is also obligatory for all citizens to contribute to the peace and security of the state by cooperating with any genuine process that would bring about sustainable peace and progress in the state, and success of government, including a disposition to loyalty and support to the heads of government.

We, therefore, reiterate our earlier call on the Police and the State Security Service (SSS) to do all that are legally required of them to bring to book those found culpable in such criminal and condemnable act against the state.

The ACN also enjoins the judiciary not to be allowed to be used by desperate politicians in issuing frivolous orders and injunctions.
