The Campaign for Democracy (CD), South-East Region has urged the Economic and Finance Crime Commission (EFCC) to investigate the abandoned N4.13 billion renovation project at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

It would be recalled that in 2009, the Federal Government through its Ministry of Aviation awarded a 12-months duration contract to PW Limited, which was meant to renovate the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu by extending the length and width of its run-way.

This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen by CD in Onitsha , Anambra on Friday.

The statement was signed by Dede Uzor A. Uzor and Dr. Jerry Chukwuokolo, who are the chairman and secretary of the group respectively.

The statement said that the 2009, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) contract should cover additional 600 metres to the existing 2,400 metres long run way at the airport; thus making it 3,000 metres or three kilometers asphalted platform.

It said that the width would be extended from the existing 45 metres to 60 metres as well as the airports expansion bid to accommodate a big wide body aircraft.

“CD is calling on EFCC to unravel the circumstances that led to the abandonment of the project, that suppose to end in 2010.

“And possibly probe and arrest the management of the company handling the project to explain its role so far in the uncompleted project even as the project has a great economic benefit to the South-East,’’ it said.

In a related development, CD also urged the Federal Government to expedite action on the commencement of work on the proposed 2nd Niger Bridge.

“With the hope of completing the project before the 2015 general election; the Federal government should start the building of the 2nd Niger Bridge in order to ameliorate the sufferings of millions of commuters who ply the single bridge daily.

“Today, the bridge is a source of chaos and serious traffic hold-ups daily and had affected commercial activities in the South-East, South-South and North geo-political zones,’’ it said.
