A senior chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Farouk Aliyu, has issued a sharp rebuke to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, accusing him of political arrogance and warning that the ruling party will not tolerate his continued attacks on APC governors ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in a Thursday interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Aliyu directly addressed Wike’s recent characterization of some APC governors as “politically lazy” and “419ners,” a comment that has inflamed an already tense standoff between the minister and the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF). Aliyu described the practice of publicly calling out political figures by name as arrogance.
The APC chieftain reminded Wike and other officeholders that political power is fleeting. He cautioned that life is transient and warned all those currently in positions of authority that a reckoning awaits, whether in this life or the next, urging Wike in particular to embrace humility.
“Adequately Compensated” — Aliyu Pushes Back on Wike’s Standing
Aliyu acknowledged Wike’s role in APC’s political fortunes but insisted the debt has already been repaid. While crediting Wike’s contribution to the party, Aliyu argued that his appointment as FCT Minister already represents substantial political compensation, calling the post a significant reward within Nigeria’s political system. He added that the party remains satisfied with Wike’s performance in the role.
Still, satisfaction with Wike’s job performance has not translated into tolerance for his public conduct. Aliyu specifically referenced Wike’s televised attacks on party figures, including Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, describing such outbursts as damaging to party discipline and the broader political climate.
“We Won’t Let Him Build PDP With Our Platform”
Beyond the tone of Wike’s remarks, Aliyu raised a deeper suspicion — that Wike could be using his APC-aligned position to strengthen the very party he still belongs to, the PDP. Aliyu stated plainly that the APC would not allow Wike to leverage the party’s platform to build up the PDP, adding that supporting the president does not give Wike license to insult APC leaders.
He also made clear the APC does not intend to import Wike’s history of infighting from his former party. Aliyu stressed that the APC would not tolerate the kind of internal conflict Wike had previously been associated with inside the PDP.
Context: Rainbow Coalition Rejected by Governors
The friction stems from the APC Governors’ Forum’s rejection of Wike’s proposed Rainbow Coalition, which the governors, led by Uzodimma, view as a parallel political structure that threatens the party’s institutional cohesion. Wike responded to the rejection by escalating his rhetoric, branding some governors as politically lazy and unable to secure their states without outside political help.
Wike has been locked in tension with the PGF over the Rainbow Coalition, which he has framed as part of his effort to secure Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. For his part, Wike has maintained that his support is directed specifically at Tinubu and does not signal that he has abandoned the PDP or that opposition parties should stand down from contesting governorship and legislative seats.
A Party Caught Between Loyalty and Discipline
The episode has placed APC’s national leadership in an uncomfortable position — needing to defend its own elected governors while managing a politically influential minister who remains officially aligned with the opposition. Aliyu, while pressing Wike to tone down his language, has also called on President Tinubu to step in personally and resolve the dispute before it further destabilizes the party’s preparations for 2027.
Whether Wike heeds the warning — or continues to test the patience of APC’s governors — is likely to shape the tone of the ruling party’s coalition-building as the 2027 race draws nearer.
