The Rivers State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association NMA says it has uncovered five medical workers practicing with fake papers.

The Chairman of the NMA in Rivers State, Ibitrokoeme Krukrubo who revealed this to Journalist in Port Harcourt said the fake medical works were uncovered following a raid by the Association’s task force against quackery in hospitals across the State.

“The constitution of the Association is to ensure the welfare of the citizens that resides any where the branch operates. To do that, we had to ensure that quackery stops and we have a list of 25 people as quacks practicing and today we went out haunting for them. The first one, a lady that runs a maternity home, she wasn’t there but we enlightened the people there and ask them to ensure that the place doesn’t operate.  The second one in Eleme is a private Hospital; I won’t mention the name because the owner wasn’t aware that the doctor was a quack. We confronted the young man and he confessed”. Krukrubo explained.

The quack doctor who spoke to our correspondent explained that he graduated with a second class upper degree in Anatomy from the University of Port Harcourt but has an interest in becoming a medical doctor. “Prior to this time, I have made effort to get properly trained in the profession. I have planned to sit for the next JAMB exams and enroll for the training. I already have a B.Sc in Anatomy and I am making concerted effort   to ensure that I get properly identified so I can practice medicine since I have a love and flare for it”, he said.

The NMA Chairman said the Association is poised to ensure that only qualified doctors will practice in Rivers State. He called on medical doctors practicing in the State to register with the Association and be issued an NMA identity card, adding that the Association will start restricting doctors without the I.D from practicing in the State.
