HURIWA Condemns Parade of Two Months Old Baby by Police for Robbery

1

Dismissing the action as atrocious, primitive and a total breach of the fundamental human rights of a Nigerian Child, a Democracy inclined Non-Governmental Organization-HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS’ ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA [HURIWA] has strongly condemned the recent action of the Ogun state Police command of parading a two-months old baby, the mother and a teenager for alleged robbery committed by the father of the toddler just as the Rights body wants the Federal Government to fish out the Police officers responsible for this dastardly act that is totally unconstitutional, illegal and criminal and punish them adnistratively to serve as deterrent for future breach of the rights of the Nigerian Children.

The media recently reported that the police in the Ogun state capital had paraded the two months old baby-master Oyinkansola Adeosun, the baby’s mother Mrs. Fausat and a fifteen year old teenager Master Tobi Adeosun over an alleged robbery committed by the baby’s father-Ismail Adeosun who fled before the police arrived the house.

The Ogun state Police Commissioner Mr. Ikemefuna Aduba reportedly told the media that the mother of the baby and the teenager were arrested for allegedly keeping gun for her husband but the woman claimed that she was no longer married to the fleeing robbery suspect and that she consistently asked the man to take away the gun which one of the arrested brothers was in the process of removing before all of them were apprehended by the police operatives.

But HURIWA in a statement to the media signed jointly by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Miss. Zainab Yusuf, faulted the primitive and unconstitutional practice of parading crime suspects before they are properly charged to the competent courts of law even when section 36[5] provides that crime suspects remain innocent in the eye of the law until proven guilty by the court of competent jurisdiction just as chapter four of the constitution containing the fundamental rights of every Nigerian citizen provided for fair hearing to be given to any crime suspect arrested for any kind of offence.

HURIWA said under no circumstances are the law enforcement officers allowed to parade a completely innocent two months old toddler whose only misfortune is that the child is a product of a very deprived and poor background. The group said what the police has succeeded in doing is to destroy the dignity of this innocent child which runs contrary to all known civilize policing standards and practices even as the group demanded sanction for this outrageous breach.

The Rights group then tasked the Inspector General of police Mr. Abubakar Dikko Muhammed and the Police Service Commission to ensure that police operatives comply with extant human rights standards and practices in their work of law enforcement in order not to make Nigeria a laughing stock before the international civilized human community who expect Nigeria as a signatory to several international humanitarian laws and human rights treaties, conventions to keep to their international and municipal obligations of promoting and protecting the fundamental human rights of all citizens including toddlers and teenagers.

HURIWA stated thus; “We totally condemn this evil practice of continuous public parade of crime suspects even before they are properly charged to competent courts of law. The operatives of the Nigeria Police must be made to comply to international human rights standards and practice by ensuring that the right crime suspects are arrested, scientific and forensic evidence generated by the police in an atmosphere of professional competence devoid of the usual obtaining of confessional statements by duress”.

The Rights group submitted further thus; “The concern of the police should not be to engage in media celebration of their so-called gallantry but must focus on effective and efficient law enforcement mechanism which will culminate in the successful trials and conviction of all crime suspects because what we currently see is that police rushes to the press to parade the crime suspects and neglect to gather good enough evidence and the courts end up setting these suspects free even after their public image is damaged by the police. Nigeria must become a civilized democracy and stop all traces of impunity and executive recklessness by the police operatives”.

Ngige has been vindicated-ACN

Following the salvo shot by the ‘oga on top’ aspirant on APGA platform,Mr Oseloka Obaze, that Chris Ngige,Charles Soludo and Peter Obi signed agreements to cede the contest of governorship elections in 2014 Anambra State to those from his zone alone, our party challenged Mr Obaze to show proof or lose credibility.
Obaze chose to lose credibility because while we were waiting to do the magic than will convert his falsehood into the truth, extracts from our rejoinder was published , in FIDES of March30-April 5 edition ,alongside further comments from Mr Obaze where he was said to be referring to a ‘Gentleman’s agreement’.
Obaze also said he would rather not discuss with those he called ‘third parties’ in the matter.
Our further response forwarded to FIDES is as follows:
Thank you for granting us space in your widely read medium to counter the falsehood raised by Mr Oseloka Obaze, Secretary on the State Government and Governorship aspirant in APGA to the effect that Ngige signed an agreement to cede governorship ticket exclusively to persons from Anambra North Senatorial Zone in 2014.
Regarding the new issues raised by Mr Obaze in yet another interview published together with our response, in the March 30-April 5 edition, we react as follows:
The introduction of the term ‘GENTLEMAN’S AGREEMENT ‘ in the March 30-April 5 edition, is a deliberate twist ,in the face of an aspirant’s information inability to prove his assertion which in the first instance was engineered by ‘oga on top’ for him.
Mr Obaze’s reference which prompted our reaction was to a written agreement which he reportedly pointed to while being interviewed. Therefore his inability to publish the document even with a golden second chance provided is conclusive.
Obaze’s admission that he ‘was not a party to the said agreement ‘which he may also never have seen, lends credence to our view in the first and this second rejoinder that Obaze is relying on hearsay, having been outside Nigeria between 1991 and late 2012,a period spanning across the 2009-2010 pre-election activities.
That Obaze is expecting Senator Chris Ngige to speak directly to him on an agreement that does not exist is neither here nor there, because he (Obaze) was not a candidate in Anambra State governorship polls of 2010, while Ngige has not indicated his interest to run for 2014 governorship elections, so there is no common platform.
Besides, is it not a very big irony that Obaze wants to deal directly with those he imagines to have signed a phantom agreement, rather than cede that aspect of the discussion to Mr Peter Obi who he admits signed ‘and ‘has been keeping to the letters’ of the agreement’, rather than dishing out third-party propaganda?
However for purposes of general education, Senator Ngige stood election in 2010 as a candidate of our great party and could not have entered into such an agreement without involving the party, which is not run like APGA or other disorganized political parties.
Therefore, our parting shot on this matter is that our party is not a third party in this matter. So the general public should disregard Obaze’s indiscretion on this failed attempt to miniaturise Anambra State and let mediocrity reign, purely in the interest of a few.

Do Not Despair, Uduaghan Urges Nigerians

0

Governor-Emmanuel-Uduaghan

Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has urged Nigerians not to despair in the face of the challenges confronting the country as Christians mark the Easter festivals

Besides, in a goodwill message to mark this year’s Easter celebrations, the Governor urged Christians to reflect on the import of Easter celebrations in their dealings, not only with other Christians, but with people of other religions.

He said Nigerians must eschew bitterness and all forms of violence, stressing that the progress, peace and security of the nation is anchored in good neighborliness and peaceful co-existence

“I urge you all to let the significance of the celebration reflect in our relationship with one another both Christians and the people of other religions. There is no doubt that these are tough times in our country”, he stated.

“Intolerance and impunity continue to rear their heads through sectarian violence. But, rather than succumb and feel threatened about these uncertain times, we should rise to the fact that these are trials that are supposed to strengthen our resolve to confront our challenges,” Governor Uduaghan added.

He reminded Christians that having gone through forty days of fasting and praying, Easter was a better time for them to purge themselves of those weights that “have impeded our progress as a people over the years by demonstrating love in its fullness not only to one another but also to our society.

“The major lesson of Easter is for us as Christians, to rethink the reality of our faith. As Christians, we should continue to uphold the principles of our faith as it relates to honesty, justice, integrity, accountability, compassion, selflessness and the pursuit of the common good,” he added.

The governor also used the celebration to draw the attention of Christians to the underlining message of the Cross, which he said must not be lost to the accompanying festivities.

“The passion and death of Jesus underscores the love of the Father who gave his only begotten son in love for us and the willingness of the Son to sacrifice himself for others to be liberated from the weight of sin.

“The story of Easter is that of relief that comes after anguish, pains, trauma, deprivations and sacrifices. Indeed before the joy that heralds the glorious morning of resurrection, there was terror and thick darkness that were strong enough to swallow up the eventual joy of Easter. It is therefore necessary to remind us all that there is always a glorious dawn after darkness, and without the difficult challenges, the huge and irrepressible triumph of Easter would have been a fantasy.”

Governor Uduaghan also used the medium to reiterate the commitment of the State government to make life better for all citizens and residents.

He said: “This is our primary concern as reflected in the quantum of projects being executed across the State and the way we are committed to the welfare of our people.”

Easter: Oshiomhole Preaches Sacrifice, Righteousness

0

edo_state_gov_adams

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State says Nigeria will attain her full potentials when her citizens resolve to live a life of sacrifice and righteousness.

In his Easter message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Peter Okhiria, Oshiomhole said: “As we commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who gave his life as a sacrifice for mankind, I enjoin the Christian faithful  to toe the footsteps of their progenitor and emulate his spirit of peace, love, sacrifice and righteousness.

The Bible teaches that ‘righteousness exalts a nation’. We must therefore be ready to wear the garment of righteousness in our dealings with one another; we must imbibe the spirit of love for one another and forgiveness to heal the wounds of the nation.

I urge the faithful to forget the past, forge ahead and live in peace, love and harmony with their neighbour in line with Christ’s teaching on the greatest commandment: ‘love thy neighbour as thyself’.

In our dear state, Edo, I enjoin the faithful to continue to maintain the religious peace, harmony and respect for people of other faith, which is needed in our quest to further propel our state to an enviable level in the country.

Our Stand on the List of Victims of 18 March Suicide-Bomb Attack at New Road Luxury Park, Sabon Gari, Kano.

  • Ohanaeze warned Boniface Ibekwe and Chi Nwogu to Stop Parading Themselves as Igbo leaders In Kano

While there has been speculations over the list of those that died in the March 18th Kano Bomb attack at the Luxury park in Sabon Gari, the Ohanaeze Nidgbo has reacted, in a statement signed by Hon. Tobias Idika President Ohanaeze Kano said; “The attention of the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has been drawn to media reports putting the death toll of the Monday, 18 March 2013 suicide-bomb attack at New Road Luxury Park, Sabon Gari, Kano, which killed scores and wounded many, at 37! And the statement credited to two persons, Mr. Boniface Ibekwe and Mr. Chi Nwogu said they spoke on behalf of Igbo leaders, in Kano.”

According to Ohanaeze in its statement, it said; “First of all, Ohanaeze Ndigbo reinstates its statement disowning one Mr. Boniface Ibekwe and warning him to stop parading himself as Eze Ndigbo in Kano. In the same vein, his cohort, Mr. Chi Nwogu is never the President of Igbo Community Association in Kano. On this note, we urge discernable minds to disregard any comment or statement coming from this group of people because they are not the voice of the Igbos in Kano.”

“Information reaching Ohanaeze leadership is that this group of people, in connivance with some dubious characters at the New Road Luxury Park has been secretly meeting with representatives of Kano state Government, plotting on how to play down the number of those who lost their lives during that grievous attack,” Ohanaeze said.

The Igbo Apex body also said that it is pertinent at this point to state that Ohanaeze leadership opened a register for relatives of victims of that incident to register their names and some of the people have been cooperating.  Ohanaeze recalls that as at 29 March, the Chairman and Secretary of Association of Luxurious Bus Owners (ALBON), Kano branch demanded for a list from our secretariat in Kano; and 37 names were given to them, with a clear message that the list remained inconclusive; “For now, Ohanaeze Ndigbo secretariat in Kano has recorded about 53 names for the dead victims and over 60 wounded. It is also important to note that a lot of people who were not residing in Kano treated themselves and quietly left. There are also many dead bodies that could not be recorded, owing to the problem of proper identification, while so many people were declared missing by their relatives. Ohanaeze Ndigbo is also aware of many victims who decided to seek treatment at private hospitals.”

According to the statement  by Hon. Chief Tobias Michael Idika, President, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Kano State Chapter he said; “if Mr. Boniface Ibekwe and his cohorts deem it fit to make a public statement in their capacity as Igbo sons, nothing would have stopped them from seeking for the information they do not have. If they had consulted Ohanaeze leadership for authentic information, it would be given to them in their capacity as a people who speak the Igbo language and may trace their roots towards the Igbo race. In this regard, Ohanaeze leadership registers its displeasure over the actions of some people who can cheaply offer themselves to be used by agents of the state to down-play such a huge loss of lives and property of our people which has widely received condemnation.”

Concluding the Igbo Apex body said that; “Ohanaeze leadership in Kano state without fear or contradiction states that Kano state government is bent at using a group of people among us to split the figures of the casualty recorded on the regrettable attack of 18 March, 2013; and Ohanaeze Ndigbo cannot fold its arms and watch this happen. And Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s stand on this matter is that we are still counting the dead, the wounded and the properties lost in that attack. Kano state Government should remain patient with us; at the appropriate time, we will release the final list.”

Kano Park Bombing: Kwankwaso Employs Fake Igbo Leader For A Hatchet Job

2

kano blast 9

The unfortunate ordeal of the Jihadist bombing of a popular luxury Bus loading depot located along New Road in the minority dominated community of Sabon Gari has found a new face in the wake of rising new criticism of the State security apparatus. As 247ureports.com was reliably informed, the State governor of Kano State, Malam Rabiu Kwankwaso has opted to tap into the minority population inside Sabon Gari to help suppress the number of casualties sustained during the bombing episode.

As gathered, immediately following the bombing, Governor Kwankwaso generated a list of casualties from the Kano State Government house. The casualty list comprised of many Kano indigenes – with one Igbo and one Yoruba name. The list was labeled as fictitious by the Igbo leaders in Kano State. The Igbo leaders comprising of Ohaneze Ndigbo leaders and his executive team – in turn – began the compilation of a broad casualty list.

The Governor’s list had pegged the number of dead at 36 with 75 wounded.

But a new twist to the governor’s attempt to suppress the number minority killed in the attack raised its tentacles yesterday – as hired numbers of the Luxurious Bus Drivers Association in Kano – dashed into the residence of the Kano State Ohaneze top boss, Chief Tobias Idika – demanding the Ohaneze list of casualties.

Reacting, Chief Idika directed them to the Ohaneze secretariat as where the official documents are stored. In the company of Idika, the group matched to the Ohaneze office.  While at the office, Idika requested for the Bus driver’s own list – to enable for comparison and better collation – and to avoid duplication of names. But the men refused.

After a heated debate that lasted for about 30minutes, the men agreed for an exchange of the casualty list. The men grabbed the list and took off.

Minutes after collecting the list, the men arrived at the home of an apologist of Kwankwaso – a fellow by the name – Boniface Ibekwe.  While at the home of Ibekwe, the men proceeded to doctor the Ohaneze list – about six pages out of the Ohaneze list were pulled out and discarded. The number of casualty was now revised to match the number originally reported by Kwankwaso.

Having revised the numbers, Boniface Ibekwe hurriedly convenes a Press Briefing to address the Press. The press briefing was held yesterday at Sabon Gari. At the press briefing he remarked that Igbos were not the targeted people by the Jihadist attackers – that the majority of the casualty were sustained by Kano Indigenes.

But the leaders of the minority community in Kano along with the Ohaneze top boss, in reacting to the latest development, told 247ureports.com that Boniface Ibekwe had been voted and branded as a ‘sellout’ and an ‘enemy from within’ by the minority community in Kano. “We know him as the enemy from within – who the state government uses to fight the minority community”.

The Ohaneze group in Kano noted that in due time the actual number of dead will be released – along with their names.

Yushau Shuaib’s Campaign against a Better Nigeria – By James Sani

okonjo iweala

I want to start by saying that Yushau Shuaib is not speaking for me as a Northerner. People like him who are fast earning a reputation as hit men who blackmail for the right price are not my advocates. I will never support his campaign to blackmail Mrs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala so that she will abandon her reform of the decadent economic system. The progressive new North we are fighting for is different from the discredited old order that Shuaib and his fellow travellers are trying to prop up. Of course this campaign is bound to fail because as everyone knows, this woman is a tough nut to crack. The orchestrated campaign to smear her with the ethnic tar will fail just like all campaigns against her previous efforts to cancel Nigeria’s external debts and save money for future generations through the Excess Crude Account failed woefully.

As a proud Northerner who believes that no part of the country has a monopoly of brilliance and high performance, I am embarrassed that people like Shuaib are making a case which gives the impression that the North has nothing to offer. It is even worse that the foundation for this campaign is falsehood. It is quite clear that this campaign cannot stand because as the great Uthman Dan Fodio said “Conscience is an open wound; only Truth can heal it”. As someone who has observed over time the passion of the Finance Minister for a better Nigeria and the hard work as well as personal risk she continues to bear (it was only last December that her mum, a retired Professor in her eighties was kidnapped)

These allegations of filling top government positions with her fellow Igbo are the latest weapon of blackmail against Okonjo-Iweala by those afraid of the massive cleanup of pension funds administration, the ports operations and especially the fuel subsidy regime through which barons have looted the treasury in the past. Whipping up primordial sentiments to smear reformist public servants is a favourite tactic of reactionary elements whose interest it is to derail or delay the momentum of reform in order divert attention from their misdeeds. This rabble-rousing article by someone who cannot justify by meritorious acclaim the public position he presently occupies is part of the on-going subterranean plot to destabilise and cripple the Jonathan administration by hitting what is generally mistaken as its soft underbelly. But they will fail because Nigeria will outlive their lies.

Yushau Shuaib’s awfully illogical and factually manipulated opinion “Still on Okonjo-Iweala’s controversial appointments” lacked the objectivity and attention to available evidence needed to hit the mark. It was high on intoxicating ethnic jingoism but suffered a huge credibility deficiency. The question is: How many appointments have Mrs Okonjo-Iweala made since her return to the Finance Ministry in September 2011? So far, only one recruitment process has been concluded under her watch – for the headship of the Sovereign Wealth Fund. And she had no control over the process that produced the brilliant young Nigerian who emerged after a very transparent contest. The position was duly advertised in reputable local and international publications. Mr Uche Orji was adjudged the best following an internationally competitive recruitment exercise conducted by KPMG, a respected global consulting agency. The Nominations Committee which ensured that the recruitment process met the best international parameters was headed by Mr Fola Adeola, one of the most respected pillars of the Nigerian private sector and included distinguished professionals from all the geo-political zones. Mr Orji’s credentials for getting the job are beyond reproach and nobody has faulted his appointment. If Yushau Shuaib is insinuating that KPMG is an Igbo enclave or was compromised in the recommendation of Mr Orji, a first class investment banker with an astute resume and a former CEO of a European subsidiary of JP Morgan, then we are dealing here with more than just crass ignorance.

The question that must be asked is: Was the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua promoting Northern hegemony when he appointed Malam Tanimu Yakubu, Dr Omar Mukhtar, Dr Usman Shamsudeen and Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as Economic Adviser, Finance Minister, National Planning Minister and Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria respectively? Igbos, Yorubas and other ethnic groups did not question Yar’Adua’s judgment then because these men were qualified for the positions and nobody accused Yar’adua of arewanisation policy. What is the lesson here? The best can come from any part of Nigeria. Inciting one ethnic group against another has led to tragic consequences in the past but fortunately the Nigerian public is fast losing its appetite for lies and deceitful propaganda. It is highly dishonest to keep silent when situation favours you and begin a campaign of lies

If Yushau Shuaib had capacity for factual double check or wasn’t in such a mad rush to blackmail the Finance minister, he would have noticed that save for the Sovereign Wealth Fund CEO who came in through KPMG, Ms Arunma Oteh, the Director General, Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr Mustapha Chike-Obi, Managing Director of Asset Management Company and Dr Abraham Nwankwo, Director General of Debt Management Office were in office before Okonjo-Iweala’s return. So how can she be blamed for appointing Igbos who were already appointed before she returned as Finance Minister? Mr Oscar Onyeama is Director General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, a privately-owned enterprise with no Government input whatsoever. This hatchet job by this discredited writer demonstrates how desperate her traducers will go to invent facts in support of their calumnious campaign.

It is a no brainer that the motivating factor for this mischievous campaign against the Finance Minister is the fear in some quarters that the acting Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service may not be confirmed. The recruitment of discredited and unscrupulous civil society hatchet men to lead Mr Kabiru Marshi’s campaign falls into a predictable pattern of subterfuge which many Nigerians can see through. It is unfortunate that against global best practices some people still see the FIRS as a lucrative honey pot for the sustenance of ethnic cronyism, hence an appointee must be of same ethnic stock as they. Many Northerners are holding top positions in the public and private sectors strictly on merit and without blackmailing the approving authority. The impression must be erased that we Northerners are gullible and cannot consider a matter as serious as public office appointment dispassionately.

Yushau Shuaib and co-travellers will be disappointed that their campaign to smear the Finance Minister is headed for the rocks. Mrs Okonjo-Iweala is admired and respected by many Nigerians including Northern elites and ordinary people because they appreciate her genuine love and hard work for a better Nigeria. The notion that she is a tribalist or anti-North will never sell. In all matters, please let us respect facts. Appointing a substantive FIRS chairman must follow due process and only the most qualified will get the position. It is an insult on the dignity and personal integrity of Nigerians, North or South, East or West, that the only way someone can be appointed into high public office is by affirmative action, by by-passing a competitive and rigorous selection process. It is sickening and defeatist for those promoting Mr Marshi’s FIRS candidacy to resort to blackmailing the Finance Minister. If a Northerner eventually gets appointed FIRS Chairman, the unfortunate and unintended impression would have been created by Yushau Shuaib’s inglorious commentary that he or she did not merit the position but rather it was a negotiated ethno-regional geo-power trade off. That would indeed be most regrettable. There is no future in Nigeria for factually-challenged and ethnically aggravating diatribes like those on which the Yushau Shuaibs of this country built their careers. They must stop peddling rumours to destroy the name of a hardworking woman who has done so much to reform the bad habits of a wayward but ambitious economic giant.

Media Briefing By Barrister Maxi Okwu On Matters Arising On The APGA Convention And Appeal In Respect Of Suit No. E/270/2012 Okuli Jude Ejike And Victor Umeh

2

Gentlemen of the press

It is my pleasure to once again update you on matters arising in the APGA saga.

The media is currently awash with a planted and stale story that INEC issued a letter to Governor Peter Obi our dynamic Deputy Leader stating he lacks the powers to convene an APGA Convention. Yes, there was a letter dated 1st March 2013 reference Nos INEC/DPPM&L/003T titled RE: NOTICE FOR THE CONDUCT OF CONGRESSES/CONVENTION FOR THE ELECTION OF PARTY EXECUTIVES OF OUR GREAT PARTY. INEC in the said letter noted that “the power to convene a meeting of any organ of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is vested in the Chairman of that body.”

The Commission then concluded in paragraph 3 of the letter by saying “The Commission cannot accede to your request to convene any convention or congresses.”

On the date INEC wrote this letter, there was a final judgment of a court of competent jurisdiction on 8th February 2013, declaring the position of National Chairman of APGA VACANT. The Court held firmly that the convention of the party of 10th February 2011 was “unconstitutional null and void.” The Court further stated “in strict law no national officer of the party was validly elected at that convention.”

It was obviously with a view to save the party which had been literally decapitated that the face of APGA, Governor Peter Obi sought to intervene and save the party. By the provisions of Article 10 (2) (xxxviii) of the party constitution, Governors and their Deputies produced by the party are ex-officio members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party. They were not elected by the Convention and therefore could not have been affected by the judgment of 8th February 2013.

INEC had a contrary view as law abiding citizens we had the option to accept it or test the matter in court. We chose however to remedy the situation after better legal opinion.

Contrary to the position of INEC the power to convene a national convention is vested on the NEC. See Article 22(1) of the constitution of APGA duly filed with INEC.

It was on the strength of this that on 11th March 2013, a notice of convention slated for 8th April 2013, pursuant to section 85 of the Electoral Act 2011 (as amended), was duly served on INEC. The resolution to issue this notice was made at an emergency meeting of the rump NEC of the party at a meeting on 8th March 2013 at Awka. See Article 22(2)c of the APGA Constitution.

This is the position. We are satisfied that the convention of 8th April 2013 of our great party to elect a brand new NEC would hold. Only a court order can stop it now, and as we speak there is no such court order. We would advise the opposition to retrace their steps and join the new movement in the party. No amount of spin nor subterfuge can stop this moving train. Get on board or get out of the way.

DRAMA AT THE COURT OF APPEAL ENUGU ON MONDAY 25TH MARCH 2013.

On Monday 25th March 2013, the matter of the appeal lodged by the erstwhile national chairman of our party Chief Victor Umeh came up at the Enugu Division of the Court of Appeal. We were surprised to notice that a special panel of the Court of Appeal had been constituted and sent down to take the matter. This was totally strange as we could not see what was so special about this case to warrant the composition of a special panel. Secondly it was done without notice to the respondent.

The matter was called and the panel without satisfying itself that the respondent had been served, proceeded to hear Umeh’s Counsel on a motion to stay the execution of the judgment of the Court below. It took the frantic efforts of sympathizers who called the respondent Okuli Jude Ejike who then made a dramatic appearance. Somehow he managed from the public gallery to draw the attention of the court after which he was duly served. The next thing was for this panel to adjourn for ruling till 8th March 2013

Iran said advancing ‘at murderous pace,’ could have bomb by July

0

Disgruntled security official claims Obama ‘threw sand in Israel’s eyes’ during visit last week, which seemed to convince Jerusalem to hold back on military action

Iran could have the capability to build a nuclear bomb by July, unnamed security sources said in a report published Friday.

The sources added that Israel’s leadership had been mollified by US President Barack Obama’s visit earlier this month, which saw Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seemingly cotton to Washington’s later timeline on when Iran could have a nuclear bomb.

The security sources, said to be close to Netanyahu’s talks with Obama, claimed that after seeing North Korea wield nuclear weapons despite heavy Western opposition, Tehran’s leadership had also decided to break out toward the bomb, which could be ready between July and September.

“The Iranians aren’t messing around after North Korea. What Kim Jong Un has Ahmadinejad has,” a source told the Israeli daily Maariv, referring to North Korea’s and Iran’s respective leaders. “At the end of 2012 the Iranians carried out a simulation of a nuclear explosion and since then have been advancing at a murderous pace every day.”

Last year, Netanyahu told the UN General Assembly that Iran could have the bomb by spring 2013, but Israeli officials have revised the assessment several times to later dates. Obama, who visited Israel last week to discuss cooperation on Iran, among other things, seemed to convince Netanyahu to go along with the US timeline, which holds that Iran is still a year away and has not yet decided to race full-speed to a nuclear weapon.

However, the sources said Obama’s charm offensive had managed to “buy” Netanyahu — and Israel ended up losing out, with Jerusalem’s hands now tied on Iran.

“The president threw sand in our eyes and now we are reaping the storm,” one source said. ”They bought us with flattery and displays of friendship, but managed to evade any responsibility for a strike.”

While Israel has pushed for a military option against Tehran’s nuclear program, the US has maintained that time remains for diplomacy and sanctions to end the standoff. Netanyahu’s statements during Obama’s visit seemed to indicate Israel would not act without US backing, which many analysts say would be necessary for an effective attack.

Iran claims its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, but several rounds of talks over allowing in inspectors or curbing enrichment have yielded few results.

ACN Welcomes Gov. Amaechi’s Call for Public Debate

0

The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Rivers State Chapter receives the information of Gov. Amaechi’s readiness to be engaged in public debate with pleasure.

“we feel delighted that the Rivers State Governor, RT. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi has at last accepted to be joined in a public debate, a forum we have over the years advocated without being considered necessary by the Governor,” ACN in a press statement issued in Port Harcourt by its Publicity Secretary, Jerry Needam said.

While commending the Governor for taking, even though that long, the bold step in offering himself ready for the public debate, the party wonders why officials of the ruling party, the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, shy away from engaging in such forum, which gives the impression that there are some skeletons in their cupboards.

For us, the beauty of Democracy is about the availability of the leaders to the people and the people always having access to their leaders and resources in terms of knowledge and making decision on the utilization of those resources. The leaders therefore, in the light of this, function as custodians and managers of the peoples resources, and are bound to at all times report and give explanations of their activities to the people.

So, public debate in our view is one of such fora that offer the opportunity for better understating between the leaders and the governed. A good leader would therefore take advantage of such opportunity.

As we look forward to a no distance date for the schedule of the public debate by the Governor, we would further request that key stakeholders and responsible professional bodies be allowed to organize and moderate the proceedings of the session to demonstrate the seriousness on the part of the participants.

Particularly, credible bodies like the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, and the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, should be engaged to set the agenda for the debate without any restriction on participants.

ACN hopes that the Governor will not rescind his earlier resolve to participate in the event as previously has been the case.
