Sen. Uche Chukwumerije Is Dead

0

Sen. Uche Chukwumerije is dead.

Chukwumerije, a former Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, died on Sunday in a Turkish Hospital in Abuja at the age of 75.

He was a three-time senator that represented Abia North, he was elected into the Senate  in 2003.

Chika Chukwumerije, son of the deceased told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview that his father died of lung cancer at exactly 4.30 p.m., on Sunday.

“We are trying to organise some things; he died at exactly 4.30 p.m., this evening.

“He died here in Abuja and was surrounded by his friends before his last breath.

“He has been an inspiration in ways I cannot explain,’’ Chika said.

Chika also told NAN that burial arrangements would be communicated once it had been concluded.

Chukwumerije, elected a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in April 2003, represented Abia North Senatorial District.

He served as minister of information in the dying days of the military regime of Ibrahim Babangida and later served in the same capacity in the interim national government of Ernest Shonekan.

NAN recalls that Sen. Chukwumerije was rumoured to have slumped and died in 2014 after the legislator lost his return bid to the Senate in a PDP primary election.

The rumour was later described as the handiwork of “a few ungodly and irresponsible individuals.”

Gunmen In Police Uniforms Attacks Jonathan’s Aide House In Bayelsa

0

Christopher Uche, Yenagoa

Suspected gunmen dressed in Mobile Police uniforms weekend invaded the private residence of the Senior Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr Waripamowei Dudufa, located behind the Tower hotel in Yenagoa carting away unspecified items.

The gunmen, according to eyewitness account, repeatedly demanded to know the whereabouts of the Policemen guarding the house and when they were told they were not on duty, they  ransacked the whole house and destroyed the safe close to Dudafa’s room.

The private security man on guard, Alhaji Mohamed Adamu, who confirmed that the gunmen were Ten in number, said the armed men banged on the gate ordering him to open the gate for them.

According to him, when he asked what was their mission, they told him they were from the Police headquarters in Abuja and they wanted to see the Policemen guarding the house.

“I asked them what they wanted and they said they were sent from the Police headquarters. I saw them wearing mopol shirts and trousers and I opened the gate. Immediately they came in they pushed me into my room and demanded the keys to the main house which I told them I don’t have.  They used an electric cable to tie my hands and legs and sealed my mouth”

Adamu disclosed that armed men ransacked his room and found a bag where they found bunch of keys which they used to gain access to the main house.

He said one of his brothers, Ibrahim who went out came back and was taken by the gunmen to the boys’ quarters to access a room where a nephew of Dudafa, Preye Okoru was sleeping.

Okoru in an interview stated that the gunmen slapped him severally and threatened to kill him if he does not show them where the Policemen guarding the house were hiding.

He said after he convinced them that the Policemen were not on duty, he was taken to the security house where his hands and legs were tied and his mouth sealed.

Okoru disclosed that he overheard them discussing with some people on phone and they asked for a vehicle to come and pick them after they had completed the mission.

He said he could not ascertain what they took in the house but he heard them dragging a big bag towards the gate when they were going.

Investigations revealed that the Bayelsa state Police command when informed of the incident dispatched a patrol van of the Operation Doo Akpor and a crack team of Police detectives to the house.

Dudafa is seen as a possible opposition to the administration of Governor Seriake Dickson, and is allegedly being sponsored by Dame Patience Jonathan to take over power from Gov. Dickson in the forth coming governorship election in the state.

APGA’S Umeh Berates Danjuma, Others over Comments on Ojukwu, Ndigbo

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) Chief Victor Umeh has berated Gen Theophilus Danjuma (Rtd) for what he saw as his unacceptable remarks on the late Biafran warlord and Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

Chief Umeh had in an interview in Awka yesterday wondered why some Nigerians who could not summon courage to talk ill about Ojukwu while alive have now suddenly woken up from their slumber to insult the memory of the symbol of Igbo man. He noted that any insult on the late warlord, was actually on all Ndigbo, hence would not be tolerated from any individual or group of individuals. He warned all citizens to respect the sensibilities of others and tame their leaking mouths.

According to Umeh, “….Danjuma displayed rare cowardice for not talking while Ojukwu was alive. Of course how dare he talk before a lion, a strong man is always avoided, and those of them who talk ill against late Ikemba were inferior to him in terms of education and wealth.

“As at the time Ojukwu was involved in the Nigerian affairs in the 1960’s he had a Masters Degree from the University of Oxford, but those insulting Ojukwu now had no education. They shot themselves into the Nigerian oil and got rich overnight, which has now emboldened them to talk carelessly today.

“and for insulting Ojukwu who is a symbol of Ndigbo, Danjuma will be judged rashly as one of the people who contributed to marginalization of Igbo’s in Nigeria, he has always being a hater of Ndigbo, now that his memory and brain is failing him, he can talk anyhow, people should ignore him, at the end of his journey in Nigeria and on this earth he will be judged very rashly,’ he said.

Umeh noted that most Nigerians are having their past time by insulting prominent and ordinary Igbomen, ‘We have in recent time become a laughing stock for some irresponsible men who gets up and start talking nonsense about Igbo people, if it is not about voting in an election, it is about one nonentity insulting respected Igbo men”.

“Well Ojukwu our leader has passed on, so, instead of joining issues with Gen. Danjuma, Ndigbo should rather wait for him to pass on since, he belongs to the generation of late Ikemba Nnewi, one day he will pass on too.

“I believe he is suffering from insomnia, loss of memory, it is a sickness he is actually suffering from, he loses memory intermittently, his brain is no longer connecting well and instead of us joining issues with him, we will wait for him to join his generation that is already exiting, we cannot begin now to bite ourselves because somebody whose time is almost up is talking very irresponsibly,’ he said.

For Umeh, “Ojukwu from every account of history was a bold man who resisted the injustice being handed down on his people, Gen. Danjuma does not belong to that league of strong personalities, he only became relevant after the Nigerian Biafran war which he used the advantage of being on the Nigerian side to amass oil wealth in Nigeria” he maintained.

“Danjuma is having plenty oil money, he can afford to abuse anybody, including President Jonathan who visited him, but what consoles us is that he is a human being, one day he will also pass on like Ikemba he insulted and history will record him for what he has done.

“He has oil wealth in Nigeria today, he is richer than many state in the country, he was the one who fought the war and took advantage of the war to appropriate oil wealth to himself, common wealth of Nigeria, he appropriate for himself and family,’ Umeh said.

He regretted that some Nigerians stole our commonwealth to the extent that they do not know what to do with it again, and they do not even know that people are suffering or are in need of help.

“Millions of Nigerians are unemployed, yet some people who shot themselves into oil wealth with guns and became richer than some states cannot provide jobs for them with our common wealth they stole, instead they are saying and doing things that can make the people revolt against them.

“I know that in no distant time the Nigerian people will take their revenge on all the oil thieves who stole their oil wealth through the guns and their ill gotten wealth will be taken and recovered from them, if we did not do it now, one day our children will go after their children and recover all their fathers stole from Nigeria, and it will become history”

“They settled themselves with the nation’ soils wells for carrying gun against Ndigbo during the civil war, they shot themselves into riches and affluence at the expense of Nigerians, so they did not understand the issue that led to the war because at that time, somebody like Danjuma was not mentally developed to appreciate what Ojukwu saw and confronted at that time, Umeh stated.

Nigeria has capacity to deliver 5,500mw of electricity, loses N1.5bn yearly to vandalism, says Nebo

0

The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, said on Friday that the Federal government had the capacity to deliver 5,500 megawatts of electricity to Nigerians regularly if there was adequate gas supply.

Nebo said this when he fielded questions from State House correspondents after the meeting of the Board of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC)  in Abuja.

According to him, the benefits of the power projects were denied the citizens by the activities of pipeline vandals

“With regard to our generation today, I would like to make a differentiation between installed capacity and available capacity.

“Because of the projects that have commissioned, we have a capacity now to deliver minimum of 5,500mw with gas because when I talk about availability, we are also talking about gas.

“The problem today is still vandalism. Whether it is the Eastern or Western axis, we keep suffering vandalism and it happened almost predictably every two weeks.

“Once they hit the Western axis, the Excravos – Lagos pipeline, the only reason they hit it is apparently for sabotage because you can’t collect the gas, you can’t sell the gas or store the gas.

“Only gas flows through these pipelines.

“Anybody who is doing that is only trying to sabotage the effort of the government and to make sure that Nigerians are kept in darkness.’’

According to the minister, when vandals “hit the trans-Forcados pipeline and so on they steal oil but because of the associated gas and the oil as the condensate gets built up and the condensate tanks are full, you have to also shut down the gas lines.

“At a time we had to lose 1,600mw of power supply to Nigerians because of vandalism. This is so painful.’’

He said that in spite of the regular vandalism which occurred every two weeks, “ the most painful aspect of it is that between 24 and 36 , latest 48 hours of repair, they go to another place and vandalise.

“In other words we are in a constant maintenance exercise, constant repair exercise,’’ Nebo said.

The minister said that it got to the point where four massive vandalism took place between February and March.

He said consequently, the government had to test the reliability of the entire system to be sure that it was still strong enough technically to handle gas flow.

Nebo said the losses were at huge costs to the government every month.

“And it costs the gas transport company a minimum of N120 million every month to repair these vandalised gas pipelines.

`You are talking about N1.5 billion every year minimum, just to repair the vandalised pipelines.

“There is no reason why they should be vandalised.

“So, when you see a situation where we can give Nigerians 5,500mw of power if we have the gas and our own compatriots have refused to  allow that to happen, you now see the frustration that all of us go through.’’

The minister called for a lot of security measures to effectively protect the pipelines.

“We synergise with the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, with the office of the National Security Adviser, with the army with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

“We are working together but I think a lot more need to go into place and there has to be a digitised mechanism of surveillance so that the entire length and breadth of the oil and gas pipelines are under constant surveillance system in a digitised format.

“That is the only way we are going to find out what is happening at any moment, be able to locate exactly where the vandalism is taking place and even possibly to forewarn those who are trying to do that to know that they are being observed.

“Availability wise, I think no administration has done as well as this administration.

“We have actually taken Nigeria to a different level but unfortunately the saboteurs have refused that Nigerians should share the benefits. That is where we are today.’’

Alleged plan to destabilize PDP: APC slams Metuh, offers him crash course on his new role

0
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied having any hand in the crumbling of the PDP, as alleged by the party’s National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh, while offering him (Metuh) a free, six-week crash course on his new role as the opposition spokesman.

Reacting to the allegation by Metuh that the APC has been working to destabilize the PDP, the party (APC) said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Abuja on Friday, that during the training, Metuh will be given free lessons by his APC counterpart, in the spirit of cooperation and for the advancement of the nation’s democracy.

”Metuh will need the training to effectively carry out his new, tough task. It is now obvious that he needs to understand that for him to succeed in his new role, he must be credible, empirical, more sophisticated in language use and very passionate, in addition to being able to operate on a lean or zero budget,” it said.

APC said it is ludicrous, to say the least, for anyone to suggest that the APC is seeking to destabilize the PDP, when the erstwhile ruling party has done such a great job of crumbling under its own weight, having gorged on the commonwealth.

”Really, it beggars belief to say that the APC is seeking to lure away members of the PDP’s NEC with ‘phantom promises and threats’, with a view to destabilizing the party, when everyone knows the rate at which PDP stalwarts have been rushing to jump off the sinking ship called the PDP before it finally tips over.

”Our National Chairman and our President-elect have even spoken out publicly on this issue, encouraging the eager PDP defectors to stay back in their party so they can provide a formidable opposition to the new ruling party. How then can anyone accuse the APC of either luring away PDP members or seeking to destabilize a party that has done itself in?” the party queried.

It advised Metuh to take a little time off so he can engage in some introspection, against the backdrop of the total repudiation by Nigerians of the brand of politics that his party, the PDP, played in its days as the ruling party.

”There is no doubt that Metuh is in a hurry to do his work as an opposition spokesman. He should not worry. He should save his energy, because he would need it, in addition to the crash course which has been offered to him freely, if he is to function effectively in his new role. Having been in opposition for so long, we can tell Metuh that it is not a cakewalk.

”Lies by themselves never travel far enough for the truth not to catch up with them, as the PDP must have now realized when its strategy of muckraking, distortion of facts and blatant falsehood – under the guise of electioneering campaign – failed to turn the tide in its favour during the last elections. But it seems the lead actors in that failed strategy, Metuh included, have not yet learnt their lessons, hence they have continued to engage in their despicable pastime.

”The APC has no time to waste on luring away members of the PDP. We have our hands full as we seek to clear the mess that the PDP has made of Nigeria and the state of hopelessness to which its 16-year rule has plunged the citizens. Because Nigerians wanted change, they voted for our party. How then can the party of change allow itself to become populated by the same folks whom Nigerians have rejected?” APC said.

“PDP Will Rise Again” – Bamanga Tukur

1

One time National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur believes the PDP shall rise again after what
happened in the 2015 elections.

Speaking in an interview in Yola the Adamawa State Capital, the
country’s Ambassador at large noted that lessons must be learnt from
what happened.

According to him, it was for this kind of reason that he had kicked
against imposition and impunity in the party.

He was however quick to say that despite the setback, the party will rise again.

Alhaji Bamanga Tukur stressed that what must be realized is that
internal democracy and not imposition must prevail else there will
continue to be a problem.

In a response to a question, the former chairman of the PDP said like
two football clubs, one must win and the other looses.

He then congratulated the APC Governor elect of Adamawa state and all
the legislators for their success in the elections.

Alhaji Bamanga Tukur urged those who loss to embrace the winners
adding that tomorrow was another day.

The ambassador at large who has met with so many world leaders urged
the incoming administration to fight corruption which he says was a
societal ill which must be addressed.

He then urged all to be peaceful so that the new administration will
strive at developing decaying infrastructures.

Before Val Obienyem Destroys what is left of Peter Obi’s image – By Ejimonu Udenka

Val-Obienyem--620x350

Val Obienyem, a man who owes his name recognition merely to his association with Mr. Peter Obi has become very irritable lately and for reasons best known to him, has been threading on the “obscene and contemptible.” The vituperations he has been directing at the Anambra seat of power and the person of the governor have brought to the fore the disdain Mr. Obienyem has for either the office left by his boss barely a year ago, or the current occupant.

Prior to the recent rant, Mr. Obienyem had applied every gimmick possible in the social media, using all manner of proxies to concoct lies and attack governor Obiano with a view to whittling down his burgeoning profile as a performer, and sustain the myth of the Peter Obi legacy. His actions were executed without regard to Chief Obiano’s steadfast pursuit of the Continuity policy which brought him into office and the development strides evident in Awka capital and across the state.

Having functioned as a Media Aide to the former governor of Anambra State for eight years, one would have expected Mr. Obienyem to have understood the rudiments of the trade. Though a lawyer, Val has been wearing the toga of an Image manager  for his brother governor Obi, hence it has become necessary to draw his attention to the fact that today’s media Aide does much more than prepare press releases, set up press conferences, and handle responses to media questions and deal with negative publicity. These demonstrable skills are necessary for the job but they are largely tactical. In fact, what makes the most impact for clients and bosses desirous of courting the public glare like Mr. Obi has done  requires a well-thought out strategic direction in order to be sustainable.

Often I imagine how high Mr. Peter Obi’s reputational capital would have soared had his minders taken-up the gauntlet to craft an exit strategy that would enable him build and push a pan-Igbo agenda across the South-East. Undoubtedly, the gap goes a long way in explaining the quality of thinking around the office and the value-adding potentials of Mr. Obienyem while Mr. Obi presided over Anambra. What is in evidence so far is the fact Obi must have worked in company of purposelessly vindictive characters who never really got over the shock of leaving office. Had Mr. Obienyem and few of the denizens around the then governor Obi, mined the positives effectively, this constant look over the shoulder to define and protect Mr. Peter Obi’s legacy wouldn’t have been necessary, because history undoubtedly ensures there is a space for us all.

Unfortunately, Val, having grown accustomed to the skewed perception of his boss as the best thing that ever happened to Anambra, never fathomed that anyone could dare dominate the space called Anambra in the way and manner the current governor and successor to his beloved Peter had. It is no longer news that Chief Willie Obiano, Akpokuodike, arrived the scene as a manager of men and resources with a suave disposition and in barely one year, vacuumed the cobwebs of delicately woven fabric of deceptively austere style that dictated governance in the state even whilst enriching a few.

There is no doubt that Akpokuodike’s giant strides have not gone down well with Mr. Obienyem, hence his tantrums and ignoble dance like nwanza who dared his god

to a wrestling bout.  Though inconsequential in the scheme of things, Mr. Obienyem tends to forget that he is not Mr. Peter Obi who is well placed to fend for himself should the need arise. But then, there are yet no cause for alarm, save for Val’s deliberate distortions in the media aimed at setting Obi and Obiano against each other.

It is obvious that Val is taking his job too seriously hence he does not know where to draw the line. My humble advise is that he should beware, like the Soldier and statesman, Charles Joseph de Ligne, rightly observed “One could forgive the fiend for becoming a torrent, but to become an earthquake was really too much.”Val should thread softly, since throwing darts at one’s elder does not secure the place of his peers.

Over time, I followed the former governor Peter Obi and Governor Willie Obiano’s assumed spat and I have drawn the conclusion that it was largely restricted to the social media space where hirelings and unschooled lieutenants dominate.  I was very comfortable when I realized that Obiano’s media Aides remained largely aloof to the gossips fuelled by proxies, until recently when I read their reaction in main-stream rebuttal of Mr. Obienyem’s attack which he had carried on with on Facebook. Again, my advice to the governor’s Aides is to avoid getting sucked into the fray as that might distract them from the objective of publicizing good governance.  To Val, I say back-track from this ignoble path, less you drag your boss further down. He doesn’t need such now.

After all, it was the German Composer Ludwig van Beethoven who said on hearing that Napoleon had declared himself an Emperor, “He is an ordinary human being after all!…now he will put himself above everyone else and become a tyrant.” Peter Obi is now a respected citizen of Anambra. Let him enjoy the accolades that come with the office he once held, any attempt to pull down another in other to assert his pre-eminence would be counterproductive.

Iwuanyanwu Raises Death- Threat Alarm

2

-As APC Seeks REC’s Removal

Member Of PDP BOT, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu Raises The Alarm Over Plot To Eliminate Him While Describing Governorship Election In Imo State As A Sham As APC Calls For REC’s Redeployment

Elder statesman and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees member, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu has alleged of an executive plot to eliminate him over his support for the party during the botched governorship elections in the state.

Speaking at a press briefing in his Ugwu Orji Glass House in Owerri, the Imo State capital, Iwuanyanwu said he had intelligence report that some highly placed persons in the leadership of the state wanted to kill him on April 11, during the governorship and House of assembly elections.

According to him, “I learnt over 4000 thugs were trained and armed. I was also warned to steer clear of the polls or risk assassination. With the arrests recorded by security agents during the election, we confirmed the information that the police and army uniforms were freely issued and government vehicles repainted to bear police colours. I heard also the governor has threatened to retire me, but he tends to forget that he is not God. I have brought value to Imo State and have impacted life even on my personal capacity. I think it is absolutely unfair to want to rise to power by killing or retiring Iwuanyanwu”.

As he raised the alarm, All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, called for removal of Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), accusing him of connivance with the PDP.

Iwuanyanwu also expressed serious apprehension over the future of democracy and civil rule in the state under Governor Rochas Okorocha.

He says his fear is borne out of the antecedents of a new crop of politicians with inordinate love for power; who could do anything to assume positions of power.

Iwuanyanwu noted that a lot of desperation and criminality were brought to bear in the last governorship election in Imo.

“My voice was cloned last week by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Imo State government; and used to mislead Imo people telling them to vote APC. My voice was played every five minutes on the government owned Orient FM soliciting votes for APC. When I called Orient FM, they said it was sent to them from the Imo government House. Former Governor Achike Udenwa’s voice was also cloned; I have never seen this level of fraud, dishonour and impunity in my political life” The PDP leader lamented that Nigeria’s democracy would have made no progress if after more than half a century of Nigeria’s independence; ‘the governorship charade in Imo on April 11 is upheld.’

According to him, “in this same state, an INEC official made the statement before cameras that she was kidnapped and forced to write election results at gunpoint and nothing has been said or done about this.”

Meanwhile, APC in the state has accused the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Gabriel Ada, of plotting to rig the election in favour of PDP.

Speaking also at a press briefing yesterday in Owerri, Director General of Rochas Okorocha Governorship Campaign Organisation, Iheukwumere Alaribe alleged that the REC intentionally increased the number of the permanent voters cards (PVCs) collected as against the original number prior to the elections.

“We have applied to the REC to release to us officially the number of PVCs collected in the areas where the rerun elections would hold on April 25, but he appears too unwilling to grant our request. It is our belief that when we have the number of PVC distribution, it’ll be difficult for anybody to rig the election.

“However, we were surprised to hear the REC say the PVC collection is still ongoing when the INEC has stopped the issuance of PVCs nationwide.

“To us, further distribution of PVCs is tantamount to changing the goal post in the middle of the game and it is unacceptable to us”, he said.

Alaribe also alleged that the REC intentionally included areas where elections had been conducted and results announced, including areas where the INEC electoral officers did not make any recommendations for rerun, adding that this was done by the REC to justify the inflation of the number of the voters in the affected areas.

He listed some of the places where elections had held and results announced but were included in the rerun election to include Ezinihitte ward in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state and Oru East LGA.

Alaribe added that in Nkwerre LGA, the REC inflated the number of registered voters and PVC collected.

He explained that in Umuibu Village Hall, Owerri Nkworji ward 1, the original number of registered voters brought by the INEC before the elections was 254 with 220 as the number of PVC collected, but was inflated to 1000 after the governorship election ahead of the rerun.

The situation, he said, was the same in Isiowerre booth 4 in Owerri Nkworji ward 2, where he alleged that the number was inflated from 593 and 496 as the number of the registered voters and PVCs collected respectively to 1900 and 1557 as the number of the registered voters and PVCs collected respectively.

“These are errors too many to be unintentional and therefore, we the members of the Rochas Okorocha Governorship Campaign Organisation and the APC are of the opinion that the REC is an interested party and that he is not competent to supervise the governorship rerun election in Imo State.

“We call on the chairman of the INEC to direct the REC to release to us the number of PVCs collected in the areas affected by rerun election and stop him from further distributing the PVCs. Jega should personally or through men of goodwill look into the Imo election and keep the REC aside because we don’t have confidence in him. He is an embarrassment to democracy”.

When contacted on the allegation that INEC compromised, Mr Elias Osim, Head Voter Education and Public Enlightenment, INEC, Owerri told our correspondent to meet the REC himself as he did not have answer to such allegations.

Our reporter could not reach the REC as his phone line was not reachable as at the time of filing this report. Also, all efforts made to reach the Emeka Ihedioha Campaign Organisation proved abortive as its director general, Barr. Chris Okewulonu could not answer several calls put to his phone while the phone line of its spokesman, Enyinna Onuegbu was not reachable.

Jonathan, Senate Set On War Path Over N1bn Amended Constitution

0

President Goodluck Jonathan and the Senate may be heading on war path, following Jonathan’s refusal to give his assent to the amendments made by the National Assembly to the 1999 Constitution.

Jonathan had written to the leaderships of both the House of Representatives and Senate, telling them that he would not sign the amended document.

The letters, which were dated April 13, were received at the offices of the Speaker of the House (Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal) and Senate President (Senator David Mark) on April 14.

They were, however, read on the floors of the Green and Red chambers on April 15.

According to Jonathan, the document did not meet some provisions of Section 9(3) of the 1999 Constitution.

Jonathan particularly accused the National Assembly of planning to whittle down some executive powers of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with the document.

He also faulted some amendments, which would give executive powers and duties to the legislature and the judiciary.

Of the 12 errors that were listed in the amendments, the President said: Alteration to constitution cannot be valid with mere voice votes unless supported by the votes of not less than four-fifths majority all members of National Assembly and two-thirds of all the 36 State Houses of Assembly.

Shocked by the development in view of the fact that the bill cost the National Assembly a whopping sum of N1 billion within the last three years, the Senate President mandated the Senate Committee on Constitution Amendments to study Jonathan’s letter and report back next week.

Mark also directed that the letter be circulated to all the senators to enable them digest the contents properly in order to make valid contributions during the debate next week.

Unfortunately, the Committee, led by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, could not go ahead with its two-day retreat, which was supposed to start on Wednesday because Jonathan did not return the original bill, which is against the practice.

Briefing his colleagues on the development during plenary on Thursday, Ekweremadu reported that the Committee has asked him to inform the Senate to ask Jonathan to return the original copy specifically containing the signature page to the chamber.

“We slated to have two-day retreat to consider the letter and advise the Senate appropriately. In the course of our sitting yesterday, (Wednesday), we noticed that second to the last paragraph of that letter, the President said (that) he was returning the Bill with the letter.

“Unfortunately, the Bill was not returned with the letter, and we could not proceed because we would like to see the returned Bill.

“The Committee has asked me to raise this point, to request the President of the Senate, to ask the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to send back the original copy of the Bill as sent to him, especially the signature page.

“This is to enable us to proceed with our work, especially since he had indicated in his own letter that it was accompanied by the Bill. So, we would like to have the Bill in its original form, especially the signature page,” Ekweremadu said.

It was learnt that the Senate’s insistence to have the original copy of the Bill, containing the signature page from Jonathan was sequel to information at its disposal that the President had initially signed the Bill before withdrawing his assent allegedly due to intense pressure on him.

In his remarks, Mark agreed with Ekweremadu’s submission and subjected the request to a vote and the senators, voted in its support.

“I think the important thing is that, if the floor accepts that I send that letter, then I will write a letter to Mr. President to return the original copy of the Bill to us.

“This was referred to your (Ekweremadu’s), Committee. So, if that is the decision of the Committee, then we have little or no option on the floor here. There is a bit of urgency of this. So, in writing that, we should have it at the earliest possible time,” Mark said.

Mark assured his colleagues that he would write the letter within two to three days because of the urgency involved.

There are indications that the National Assembly was spoiling for war over Jonathan’s action because the lawmakers see the constitution amendments as the hallmark of the Seventh Senate to which a whooping N1 billion  was spent to put together.

However, Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Enang, has described Jonathan’s refusal to assent to Constitution Amendment Bill as another act of statesmanship.

Enang, who stated this in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, observed that in spite of the fact that the President’s tenure would soon end, he was magnanimous to point out some anomalies in the Bill, and as such, withholding his assent.

“Let me, for one thing alone, congratulate and appreciate President Goodluck Jonathan. He did not say ‘I am not going to be the President in the next 30 days, let me just assent to it’.

“He did not say, ‘whatever problem there is, let it be a problem that the Buhari administration will come to face’.

“He believed that he should be as a soldier; standing at his post to the end and I commend him because he would ordinarily  have signed it and said ‘I wash my hands off like Pilate’. He still put his thoughts together and said; this I refuse to do on these accounts.

“To that extent I commend his honesty, I commend his statesmanship,” Enang said.

Enang, however, noted that the observations made by the President were coming late as the National Assembly had already passed the Bill.

He specifically blamed relevant officers in the presidency, who according to him, should have pointed out the issues at the point of the public hearings.

“At this stage, we have gone through public hearing at different stages and this is a bill that passed through the National Assembly for three years. When we had  the public hearings, those making these observations did  not appear.

“The President didn’t need to appear, but the Attorney General, Secretary to the Government, Accountant General and all the other institutions ought to have appeared. It is indolence on the part of the Attorney General and the SGF, who ought to have called President’s attention to these matters when the hearing was going on.

“In view of the development, the National Assembly would  hold close consultations with the President to look at the observations made and vote on some of them,” he added.

As the Bayelsa state Governorship election draws nearer, a group under the aegis of Network for Bayelsa People’s Forum (NBPF),has expressed  concern over the possibility of the People Democratic Party ( PDP), to return the Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson, as  the party flag bearer in the state.

The Chairman of the group, Mr Ibipa Oweiza, in a statement issued yesterday in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, lamented that Governor Dickson has squandered the goodwill of the party in the state, as majority of the electorate
in the state are already yearning for change.

The group is of the view that if PDP insist on fielding the incumbent governor as the party  candidate in the next governorship election in the state,  they should as well consider loosing the state to any opposition political party that will also be vying for the Creek Heaven seat of power.

According to them, going by the trend in the country as witnessed in the just concluded general election, any attempt to impose the incumbent governor on the people of the state, will lead to mass decamping and serious anti-party activities as most PDP members will work against the interest of the ruling parting in the state.

The leadership of the group said they are particularly worried about the governor’s penchant to instigate controversy which has already divided the party.

His words, “ Two months ago, Governor Dickson caused the suspension  of
Col. Sam Inokoba, the state chairman of the People Democratic Party, against wise counsel. This action has already polarised  the party in
the state.

“Recently  the governor instigated a sectional leadership of the party in the state to institute investigation and probe of very senior party members including a serving Senator, Emmanuel Paulker and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Domestic Matter for anti-party activities with the deliberate intention of fanning embers of discord.

“ Governor Dickson  is doing battle from all flanks within the PDP family, the party may lose the next governorship election if Dickson retains the party ticket. For the party to do well in the forthcoming governorship  election, the party should as a matter of urgency begin to shop for a popular and acceptable candidate as Dickson has made himself and the party very unpopular in the state. The party is already in disarray and something must be done to salvage it”.

Mr Oweiza recalled the recent action of  Governor Dickson, over his disruption   of court proceeding at a Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa the Bayelsa State capital.

The preferred candidate of Governor Dickson in the just concluded National Assembly  election to represent Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Mr Foster Ogola, has been having a running legal  battle with Rt Honourable Heineken Lokpobiri, over who is the authentic candidate of the People Democratic Party ( PDP) to represent Bayelsa West.

He lamented that Governor Dickson had thrown caution to the wind when he visited the court premises on the 30th  of  March, following the fixing of  hearing judgment by the presiding Judge, which according to him was  without proper notification to both parties, even as the matter has been moved away from his court.

The group  wondered why a governor should physically desecrate the temple of justice, noting that as a lawyer and former lawmaker he should lead by example, even as they are also worried about the intolerance and over-bearing disposition of Governor Dickson against critic of his administration.
