The Enugu State Government has suspended HRH Igwe Williams Ezugwu, traditional ruler of Ibagwa Opi Ogbozalla Autonomous Community in Nsukka Local Government Area, days after he hosted NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi at his palace — a timing coincidence that has triggered immediate accusations of political victimization.
The Suspension
In a letter dated September 24, 2026, the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Charles Egumgbe, informed Ezugwu he was being suspended with immediate effect, citing sections 10(a) and 10(b) of the Traditional Rulers Law of Enugu State. The ministry’s public statement attributed the suspension to persistent conduct inconsistent with provisions of that law. Specific allegations outlined include Ezugwu’s failure to constitute a cabinet to assist in administering the community since its creation, failure to subscribe to the community’s code of conduct, running the community single-handedly, and intimidating and arresting his own subjects.
The government noted this is not an isolated action: it previously suspended three traditional rulers and four community presidents-general in Ezeagu LGA back in July over alleged misconduct tied to security matters.
The Obi Connection
Word of the suspension had barely spread before it was tied to Ezugwu’s hosting of Peter Obi roughly two weeks earlier. Social media commentator “Sen” Chijinkem Ugwuanyi was among the first to publicly draw the link, posting photos of the monarch with Obi and framing the suspension as retaliation for that visit.
The NDC’s Enugu State governorship candidate, Chinyeaka Ohaa, went further, formally condemning the suspension as a political witch-hunt and an assault on the traditional institution. Ohaa noted that beyond hosting Obi, Ezugwu had also received him personally afterward, when Ohaa visited the community to commiserate over a recent kidnapping in which some residents died.
Government Pushes Back
Commissioner Egumgbe has flatly rejected the political framing. Speaking to SaharaReporters, he pushed back on efforts to tie the suspension to Obi, questioning why people insist on politicizing the matter and noting his own long-standing PDP credentials in the state. He pointed out that another traditional ruler in the state has separately received a warning letter, suggesting the ministry is enforcing the same standard elsewhere, not singling out Ezugwu over the Obi visit.
