KANO — Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially commissioned a dedicated Sickle Cell Centre to provide comprehensive, integrated care for individuals living with sickle cell disease across the state.

The launch event, held at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital on Monday, August 3, 2026, was accompanied by the symbolic flag-off of free maternal and Accident & Emergency commodities, new hospital bed sheets, and 300 customized digital blood pressure monitors.

In an official statement issued by the Governor’s Spokesman, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the administration reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Kano’s public health infrastructure and lowering mortality rates through direct state interventions.

Comprehensive Sickle Cell & Preventive Healthcare Services

Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Yusuf outlined the scope of services available at the newly established facility and explained the strategic intent behind the health commodities:

  • One-Stop Sickle Cell Management: The new Sickle Cell Centre will offer diagnosis, counseling, treatment, follow-up care, patient education, health promotion, and specialized clinical management under one roof, with guaranteed supplies of essential medicines.
  • Hypertension Monitoring for Public Officials: To combat rising cases of sudden deaths linked to cardiovascular complications, the administration procured and distributed 300 customized digital blood pressure monitors to public servants and political appointees to encourage regular health screenings.
  • Sustained Free Maternal & Emergency Care: Governor Yusuf pledged continuous support for the state’s free maternal and Accident & Emergency commodities program, noting that the initiative has saved thousands of lives across Kano since its inception.
