ENUGU, Nigeria — The peaceful atmosphere in Obeagu Ugwuaji community, situated within Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State, has ruptured into widespread protest as indigenes, spearheaded by community youths, took to the streets to demand the immediate resignation and dethronement of their traditional ruler, Igwe Christopher Ikenga (Igwe Ikenga Nya).

The protesters accused the monarch of illegally selling off vast expanses of communal ancestral lands without using the proceeds to improve the lives of the townspeople. They further alleged that rather than addressing their grievances, the traditional ruler has systematically deployed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other security agencies to harass, intimidate, and “witch-hunt” youth leaders and vocal critics within the community.

Protesters Storm Government House, Assembly Complex

Bearing placards with various inscriptions expressing their frustration, the angry demonstrators marched through key government locations in Enugu, including the Enugu State Government House, the Enugu State House of Assembly Complex, and the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs.

The protest was led by the community’s Town Union leadership under Chukwunonso (Freedom) Obi. Addressing journalists and state authorities during the rally, the youth leaders insisted that the community could no longer tolerate what they described as monarchical high-handedness and systematic land dispossession.

“Our ancestral lands are being converted into private wealth while Obeagu Ugwuaji lacks basic infrastructure. When we speak out or demand accountability for over ₦400 million in community funds, the Igwe responds by petitioning the EFCC and security agencies to arrest and lock up our youths,” one of the protesting youth leaders stated.

Key Grievances Raised By The Community

• Illegal Land Transactions: Allegations that prime communal layouts have been unilaterally allocated and sold off to private developers and speculators without the consent or benefit of the town.
• Missing Communal Funds: Failure to account for over ₦400 million belonging to the community.
• Use of Anti-Graft Agencies as Tools of Suppression: Using petitions to the EFCC and police commands to frame, intimidate, and silence community activists who question land sales.
• Demand for Dethronement: A formal request for the Enugu State Government to withdraw the monarch’s staff of office and allow the community to select a ruler who puts the people’s welfare first.

House of Assembly, Ministry React

Receiving the protesters at the State House of Assembly complex, Hon. Anthony Okoye, representing Nkanu East State Constituency, commended the youth for maintaining a peaceful posture and assured them that legislative mechanisms would be activated immediately.

“The House of Assembly exercises constitutional oversight over local government administration and chieftaincy affairs,” Hon. Okoye noted. “We will formally present this petition to the Speaker, after which a designated committee will launch an in-depth investigation. All parties, including Igwe Ikenga, will be summoned to present their side in an open and fair hearing.”

At the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs, the Commissioner, Dr. Charles Egumgbe, expressed deep concern over the recurring administrative friction and petitioning coming out of Obeagu Ugwuaji. He lamented that natural land assets that should bring development had turned into a source of bitter division. He assured the protesters that a detailed report regarding their demands for the monarch’s removal would be forwarded directly to Governor Peter Mbah.

Counter-Claims: Supporters Defend The Monarch

In the wake of the demonstration, representatives aligned with the traditional ruler pushed back against the accusations, describing them as a calculated distraction.

Spokesperson for the community’s Caretaker Committee and former Enugu State Commissioner, Chief Aloy Obodo, maintained that the allegations were a “rehash of falsehoods” designed to divert attention from deep-seated corruption by previous town union executives.

Obodo clarified that Igwe Ikenga is not a sole signatory to any community bank accounts, noting that similar petition claims had previously been presented before the House of Assembly where accusers failed to substantiate their assertions. Supporters further alleged that the friction stems from land speculators attempting to bypass established community structures.

Call For Executive Intervention

As tension continues to simmer in Obeagu Ugwuaji, community elders and youth leaders have made an urgent appeal to Governor Peter Mbah to wade into the dispute, halt all unauthorized land dealings, and protect innocent indigenes from undue security intimidation before the crisis degenerates into further violent conflict.
