KADUNA, NIGERIA — The Kaduna State Police Command has been hit by an explosive wave of public condemnation following the circulation of video evidence that directly challenges official claims regarding the brutal mob murder of an innocent female Islamic school teacher, Malama Ummulkhairi, in Maraban Jos.
The controversy reached a boiling point over the weekend after the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police appeared on the popular Brekete Family human rights reality show to strongly deny allegations that a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) willfully surrendered the defenseless woman to an enraged crowd. However, the emergence of a viral clip online has triggered severe national outrage, with activists accusing the command of a high-level cover-up.
The Maraban Jos Tragedy: Brutal Murder of a Woman Over False Rumors
The horrific incident unfolded earlier this week when Malama Ummulkhairi, a respected mother of four and a female Islamiyya teacher, was travelling to attend a religious lecture. After stopping to ask a group of children for directions, the woman was falsely accused of being a child kidnapper.
A volatile mob quickly formed, prompting her rescue and placement into protective custody at a nearby police station. However, hundreds of rioters subsequently descended on the station, eventually overpowering the facility, dragging the female teacher out into the streets, brutally lynching her, and setting her body ablaze.
While the police have already arraigned 24 suspects before a Magistrate Court at the NDA Junction for culpable homicide and rioting, the core battleground has shifted to the alleged complicity of the police high command at the scene.

The ‘Brekete Family’ Denial vs. Viral Video Proof
During a broadcast on the Brekete Family show in Abuja, the Kaduna State Police leadership insisted that operational teams did everything within their power to defend the station and safeguard the woman from the overwhelmed facility.
However, public commentators and human rights advocates have fiercely rejected the police’s narrative, pointing to newly emerged video footage that allegedly tells a far more damning story.
“The Kaduna State Commissioner of Police went on the Berekete Family show to boldly deny that the DPO released Ummukhairi to the bloodthirsty mob,” public analyst Fateema Zahra stated in a viral post. “But lies cannot erase the truth. Look at this video evidence. It clearly captures the exact moment the DPO escorted her out and handed her directly over to her killers. He delivered her straight to her death!”
The video, which has been widely shared under the hashtag #JusticeForUmmukhairi, appears to show uniform-clad officers leading the defenseless woman out of a building directly into the perimeter of a hostile crowd, rather than maintaining a hard tactical perimeter or awaiting armed reinforcements to safely evacuate her.
Demands for Independent Probe and Amnesty International’s Stance
The discrepancy has drawn the attention of international watchdogs. Amnesty International has strongly condemned the gruesome lynching of the female teacher and called for an exhaustive, independent investigation into the specific operational decisions made by the local DPO and his subordinates during the siege.
Civil rights coalitions are warning that if the federal government allows the Kaduna State Command to investigate itself, the true level of administrative negligence or complicity will be buried.
There are now urgent, direct appeals being sent to Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately suspend the DPO, order his arrest, and subject him to a transparent judicial inquiry alongside the rioters currently remanded in the correctional facility.
