MAKURDI, NIGERIA — Palpable tension has gripped parts of Benue State following the targeted assassination of the State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Ardo Risku Muhammad.
The prominent herdsman leader and his close companion, identified as Yakubu Isah, were ambushed and shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Friday, June 26, 2026.
The execution-style murder has sparked widespread concern among security agencies, coming barely one hour after the MACBAN chairman completed a critical, state-backed peace dialogue aimed at de-escalating local ethno-communal clashes.
The Fatal Timeline: A Premeditated Ambush
According to verified local government and security briefings, Alhaji Muhammad had spent Friday afternoon participating in a high-stakes peace stakeholders’ meeting in the Ohimini Local Government Area.
The peace meeting, convened by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Ohimini Command, brought together Fulani pastoralists and leaders of the indigenous Ayunne community to resolve deep-seated tensions following a series of recent fatal clashes in the axis.

MACBAN Alleges Sabotage and Premeditation
Reacting swiftly to the tragedy, the national leadership of MACBAN, through a press statement signed by National President Baba Othman-Ngelzarma, condemned the killing as a “dastardly and deeply disturbing act.”
Ngelzarma explicitly raised fears of premeditated assassination, questioning how a public advocate for reconciliation could be traced and eliminated immediately after a classified peace parley.
“The circumstances surrounding the killing raise serious concerns about possible premeditation,” the national president stated. “It is particularly troubling that a community leader who attended a security meeting meant to promote peace and stability could become a victim shortly after. This threatens all ongoing efforts towards dialogue.”
The association also disclosed a deeply worrying pattern of targeted aggression against the deceased leader’s family, revealing that one of Alhaji Muhammad’s children, a practicing lawyer, had survived a violent attack in a local village just a week prior.
Local Administrations Face Backlash Over Fragile Borders
The political leadership of the affected regions has moved into immediate damage control to stave off retaliatory violence.
The Chairman of Otukpo LGA, Maxwell Ogiri, confirmed the assassination within his jurisdiction, acknowledging that the incident has immediately driven a wedge into local security indicators. Ogiri appealed for calm, assuring the public that security forces had been heavily deployed across the Otukpo-Ohimini borders.
Concurrently, the Chairman of Ohimini LGA, Adole Gabriel, lamented the loss, confirming that the initial security dialogue had been highly successful on paper before the gunmen compromised the security grid.
The Benue State Police Command, via its Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the double homicide, stating that a multi-agency investigation has been officially launched to unmask the identity of the shooters.
The tragic ambush underlines the extreme volatility of Benue’s rural transit routes and directly threatens the state’s brittle framework for communal reconciliation, illustrating how easily tactical gains on paper can be erased by armed actors on the ground.
