ABUJA — In a major political development for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has appealed for calm following her party’s decision to drop the primary elections for the FCT senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The decision, which was made public on Friday, May 29, 2026, halts the momentum of the highly publicised #AishaForSenate campaign movement.

While the unnamed political party has cancelled the FCT senatorial primaries, it confirmed it will still proceed with primary elections for the House of Representatives positions within Abuja.

Focus on the Presidential Race

Reacting swiftly to the party’s structural adjustment, Yesufu urged her support base and political mobilisers not to be discouraged by the setback, asking them to keep their eyes on the national landscape.

“Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja,” Yesufu stated. “I urge each and every one of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be OK!”

Next Steps for the Campaign

Despite the cancellation of her senatorial bid, Yesufu expressed deep appreciation to the volunteers and donors driving the #AishaForSenate project, praising their dedication to grassroots political mobilisation.

Moving forward, the activist announced that she will pivot her immediate energy toward community advocacy. She disclosed plans to tour the six Area Councils of the FCT in the coming week to personally thank residents and sustain momentum for the development of a “Better FCT.”
