LAGOS, NIGERIA — An unnamed officer of the Nigeria Police Force became the subject of widespread public mockery after falling headfirst into a deep, open roadside trench while aggressively chasing a commercial motorcyclist (Okada rider) for an alleged bribe.
The dramatic incident, which quickly went viral online, triggered cheers from a large crowd of onlookers who openly refused to help the stranded officer out of the hole.
The Pursuit and the Fall
According to eyewitness accounts and viral social media footage, the officer had cornered the motorcyclist at a busy intersection to enforce an unapproved roadside levy. When the rider attempted to maneuver his way out of the trap, the officer gave chase on foot, attempting to physically grab the moving vehicle.
In the heat of the pursuit, the operative misjudged his footing and plunged directly into a massive, uncovered concrete drainage ditch running alongside the thoroughfare.
Trapped inside the deep trench, the visibly disheveled officer looked up and pleaded with gathered bystanders, market women, and motorists to pull him out.
The crowd completely rejected his pleas. In a moment of sharp compliance with the officer’s own aggressive priorities, one onlooker shouted back, “Go inside and chase the bikeman out of the hole!” — a retort that sent the entire gathering into roaring laughter.
A Symptom of Deep Public Anger
Civil society commentators and human rights advocates note that the crowd’s total refusal to assist a law enforcement agent in distress is a direct symptom of the deep-seated animosity between everyday Nigerians and the police force.
Decades of relentless roadside extortion, arbitrary profiling, and physical intimidation by police patrols have severely broken public trust. Rather than treating the officer’s fall as an unfortunate accident, the civilian population viewed the mishap as a form of instant poetic justice against predatory policing.
The incident highlights a growing trend of bold public defiance across major Nigerian cities. Increasingly, frustrated citizens are choosing to film, confront, or actively ignore officers who find themselves in compromised positions while attempting to extort the public.
