LOKOJA, KOGI STATE — The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially awarded its Kogi Central Senatorial ticket for the 2027 general elections to former Governor Yahaya Bello.
The decision has triggered immediate public backlash, with critics calling it a direct blow to Nigeria’s anti-corruption crusade.
The Financial Scandal
Bello is currently at the center of an intensive investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The anti-graft agency alleges that the former governor oversaw the systematic disappearance and money laundering of over ₦100 billion in public funds during his tenure as governor of Kogi State.
The high-profile legal battle has involved multiple dramatic standoffs at Bello’s residences, drawing widespread criticism over the implementation of state law enforcement.
Public and Civil Backlash
The announcement of the legislative ticket has sparked severe condemnation from accountability advocates, civil society groups, and political commentators. Activists argue that granting a ruling party ticket to a high-profile suspect undermines public trust and shields individuals from accountability.
“Awarding a Senate ticket to Yahaya Bello, who is allegedly responsible for the disappearance of over ₦100 billion in public funds, has to be one of the greatest affronts to Nigeria’s fight against corruption,” political commentator Chude Nnamdi stated publicly. Critics have also strongly lambasted EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, characterizing the agency’s prolonged inability to secure an arraignment as a failure of institutional action.
Legal and Political Implications
The move by the APC leadership guarantees Bello a path toward the National Assembly, where winning the general election would afford him significant political leverage.
The EFCC has not yet released an official statement regarding how Bello’s new status as an active 2027 senatorial candidate will impact their ongoing criminal prosecution and asset forfeiture filings in court.
