AMAOKPALA, ANAMBRA – Residents of Obunikpa village in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area, woke to a grim discovery Monday morning as a decomposing male corpse was found floating in the Iyiocha Lake.
The body, spotted near the new Amaokpala-Awka road, was discovered by community members in the early hours of May 11. The victim appears to be a young male, estimated to be in his late 30s or early 40s, and remains unidentified.
Suspicions of Foul Play
Eyewitnesses at the scene noted that the body was already in a state of partial decay, emitting a strong odor that suggests the victim died several days ago. Tensions rose as locals pointed out what appeared to be bloodstains around the man’s abdomen. Many in the community believe the man was murdered elsewhere and dumped in the lake to cover up the crime.
The location has added a layer of spiritual dread to the incident. Iyiocha Lake is revered as a “Deity Lake” where traditional worshippers gather to make sacrifices. Locals are now calling for both a police investigation and spiritual cleansing of the sacred waters.
A Pattern of Grim Discoveries
This find follows a troubling trend of bodies being recovered from water bodies across the South East. In late 2025, the Anambra State Police recovered the remains of two kidnapped victims from the Omambala River. The region also remains haunted by the 2013 Ezu River incident, where dozens of bodies were found floating on the border of Anambra and Enugu, later linked by rights groups to extrajudicial activities. More recently, security raids in forest areas like Lokpanta in Abia State have uncovered mass graves and skeletons tied to kidnapping syndicates.
Security and Identification
Local vigilantes and the Anambra State Police Command have been briefed on the discovery. While the identity of the man is still unknown, authorities are expected to evacuate the remains for an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
As of Monday afternoon, no relatives have come forward. Security agencies are urging anyone with information on a missing person matching this description to report to the nearest station.
