ABUJA, NIGERIA — The 2027 presidential landscape shifted significantly today as former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, formally entered the race under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The declaration was solidified when a high-powered delegation of political heavyweights obtained the party’s Presidential Nomination and Expression of Interest forms on Amaechi’s behalf at the ADC national headquarters.
The “Oyegun” Factor
In a move that caught many by surprise, the delegation was led by the former National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun. He was accompanied by several influential figures, including Senator Abatemi-Usman and Hon. Asita, signaling a major realignment of veteran politicians away from the country’s two dominant parties.
The presence of such high-ranking stakeholders suggests that Amaechi’s move to the ADC is part of a broader “Third Force” strategy aimed at consolidating opposition power ahead of the next general election.
Focus on Infrastructure and Reform
Supporters and party faithful who swarmed the secretariat described Amaechi’s candidacy as a “renewed national movement.” They pointed to his previous record as a two-term governor and his stint as Transportation Minister—where he oversaw major railway and port projects—as evidence of the competence needed to fix Nigeria’s ailing economy.
“This is about leadership and experience,” a member of the delegation stated. “Nigeria is at a crossroads, and we need a bold leader who has a proven track record of delivering results and building institutions.”
A Major Realignment
Amaechi’s official entry into the ADC follows the recent defection of Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi to the same party, hinting at a coordinated exodus of big-hitters from the APC and PDP. Political analysts suggest that the ADC is rapidly positioning itself as the primary alternative platform for those dissatisfied with the current administration.
While Amaechi has maintained a relatively low profile since the 2023 primaries, this formal move confirms he is ready for a second run at the presidency. A formal declaration ceremony and a rollout of his “rebuilding” roadmap are expected to follow in the coming weeks.
