In the often unpredictable landscape of sports sponsorship in Nigeria, where corporate commitments come and go, Neros Pharmaceuticals Ltd has distinguished itself with an extraordinary record of twenty unbroken years of sponsoring the Anambra State FA Cup, a feat that remains unmatched at both state and national levels. From 2006 to date, the company has not only sustained the competition but transformed it into a model of consistency, credibility, and grassroots football development, investing over N150 million in prize money, logistics, organisation and promotion.
The journey began in 2006 under the visionary leadership of its Chairman/CEO, Prof. Polycarp Emenike, MON (Odenigbo), with a memorable maiden edition that saw Gabros International defeat Estate United at the Gabros Stadium, Nnewi. The enthusiasm that greeted the competition at inception was so remarkable that the then Anambra FA leadership, led by Chief Mike Umeh and Sir Victor Nwangwu, formally presented the sponsor and the trophy to then Governor Peter Obi at the Government House, Awka, an early signal of the tournament’s significance and prospect. From that moment, the Neros FA Cup took off “like a house on fire,” maintaining momentum across the state and gaining national attention.
What makes this achievement even more striking is the context. While notable brands like Cadbury Nigeria (Bournvita), Coca-Cola and Aiteo Group have at different times sponsored the national FA Cup, none sustained such support beyond a decade. At the state level, even strong institutions like Zenith Bank (in Delta State) only managed short-term sponsorships. Neros Pharmaceuticals, however, has remained steadfast for over two decades now and still counting, little wonder why such an uncommon endurance earned the company the prestigious award as the Best Sponsor of State FA Cup in Nigeria in 2012, a special award organised by Nigeria Sports Brands under the leadership of Aikhoje Ojeikere.
Beyond longevity, the Neros-sponsored competition has unarguably delivered unforgettable moments and quintessential impacts across the state beyond. By way of instance, the 2012 edition, widely regarded as the biggest State FA Cup final in Nigeria, drew over 15,000 spectators to Nanka. It featured a glamorous curtain-raiser involving Nigeria’s victorious Golden Eaglets team that went on to conquer the world in 2013, with stars like Kelechi Iheanacho and Taiwo Awoniyi, under the guidance of Manu Garba and Emmanuel Amuneke. The event also coincided with the formal opening of the Neros Sports Stadium, Nanka, further cementing the competition’s place in Nigeria’s football history.
Year after year, the Neros FA Cup has grown into more than just a tournament. With the latest structured prize incentives of ₦2 million for winners, ₦1 million for first runner-up, ₦500,000 for third place and ₦100,000 for fourth; the competition has provided both motivation and financial support for grassroots clubs, while also serving as a gateway to the national President Federation Cup. The competition has also become a dependable platform for talent discovery, human capital development, community-cum-social engagement, and football excellence in Anambra State.
The 2026 edition, whose final was played just yesterday on April 26 at the Neros Stadium, Nanka, lived up to expectations. There, the spectators were wowed as Edel FC secured a convincing 2–0 victory over Amanda FC to emerge champions and successfully defend their title.
Records from the stadium show how Solomon Ugwu opened scoring in the 45th minute, while Damian Udoye sealed the win in the 74th minute, handing Edel FC the ₦2 million prize. Amanda FC, impressive debutants, went home with N1 million as runners-up. Earlier, Game Changers FC defeated Obosi United FC 2–0 to clinch third place and ₦500,000, leaving Obosi United with the N100,000 fourth-place prize. Both finalists will now represent Anambra State at the national stage in the forthcoming 2026 President Federation Cup.

In these, perhaps the most compelling story is not just about who wins or loses, but about who has stayed. For twenty years, despite the changing economic realities and shifting corporate priorities, Neros Pharmaceuticals has remained committed to this cause, quietly but consistently underwriting a competition that has outlived many bigger and louder sponsorships. In doing so, the company has not only rewritten the narrative of sports sponsorship in Nigeria but has also set a benchmark that challenges both public and private institutions. Hence one may ask: If one company can sustain this level of impact for over two decades, what excuse do others have?
Indeed, by sustaining this for the past two decades, Neros has not just sponsored a competition, it has built a legacy, one that has etched the company’s name on the golden stone of history for the generations yet unborn.
