ABUJA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faced a significant logistical setback following the sudden withdrawal of permission for the party to use the Rainbow Event Centre, the scheduled venue for its national convention.
The management of the facility, located in the Federal Capital Territory, reportedly communicated the decision to the party leadership on Monday, just as delegates were beginning to arrive in the city for the high-stakes gathering.
Sudden Withdrawal
While the specific reasons for the withdrawal remain unclear, sources suggest that the proprietor cited “unforeseen circumstances” and “safety concerns” regarding the large influx of political supporters. The decision left the party’s organizing committee scrambling to secure an alternative location to avoid a total collapse of the event.
Internal Reactons
National Chairman of the ADC, Chief Ralph Nwosu, described the development as “unfortunate and unexpected,” especially given that all financial obligations for the venue had reportedly been met. He urged party faithful to remain calm, assuring them that the convention would still proceed at a new, yet-to-be-announced venue.
“This is a minor hurdle in our journey to reposition the party for the 2027 general elections,” Nwosu stated. “We are already in talks with other facility managers to ensure our delegates are comfortably accommodated for the exercise.”
Political Implications
The setback comes at a sensitive time for the ADC, which is expected to ratify key constitutional amendments and elect new national officers during the convention. Some party insiders have expressed concern that the venue change could lead to a split in delegate attendance or provide an opening for rival factions to challenge the legality of the proceedings.
As of Tuesday morning, security personnel were seen at the Rainbow Event Centre, advising arriving delegates that the premises were no longer available for political activities.
