President Bola Tinubu has summoned Minister Nyesom Wike for talks over the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara faces impeachment proceedings initiated by Wike-loyal lawmakers.
The meeting, expected to take place abroad, comes amid concerns that Wike’s actions could destabilize the region and impact oil production. Fubara has reportedly travelled to France, possibly to meet with Tinubu, as tensions rise between the two former allies.
Sources close to the President say Tinubu sees Wike’s move as a challenge to his authority and a threat to national security. The crisis has sparked fears of ethnic tensions and unrest among Ijaw youths, with warnings that mishandling the situation could have severe consequences.
A senior presidential aide denied knowledge of a scheduled meeting between Tinubu and Wike, but confirmed the President’s concerns about the situation in Rivers State.
The development highlights the complex power dynamics in Nigerian politics, with Fubara’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Tinubu’s support for governors as party leaders adding to the intrigue.
