In a coordinated security breakthrough, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), Gombe Command, in collaboration with troops of Operation Hadin Kai, successfully intercepted a large consignment of ammunition disguised as waybill cargo in a commercial vehicle traveling from Maiduguri to Kaduna.
The operation, launched on August 20, 2025, was triggered by a tip-off from a vigilant driver who became suspicious of a carefully wrapped bag handed to him in Maiduguri. Upon reaching a checkpoint near Nafada en route to Gombe, the driver alerted soldiers, prompting a thorough inspection of the package.
Security forces uncovered multiple sacks filled with military-grade ammunition, raising alarm over the scale and intent of the smuggling attempt. Preliminary investigations have linked the consignment to a soldier allegedly serving with Sector 2 in Damaturu, Yobe State.
This interception is a major milestone in our efforts to disrupt the illicit arms trade fueling insecurity across the North-East and North-West,” a military source stated. “The involvement of a uniformed personnel is deeply troubling and underscores the need for internal accountability.”
The DSS Gombe Command confirmed the successful completion of its part in the operation, emphasizing the importance of vigilance at checkpoints and the role of civilian cooperation in national security.
Authorities warn that the intercepted ammunition was likely intended for distribution to various towns and villages, potentially escalating violence in already volatile regions. Investigations are ongoing to identify all individuals connected to the smuggling ring.
Citizens are urged to remain alert and report suspicious activities to the nearest security agency. The Nigerian Army and DSS reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding the nation against internal threats and ensuring peace across all regions.
God help us,” one local resident remarked, reflecting the growing concern over arms proliferation in civilian areas.
