The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has strongly refuted claims made by unknown and purported fake members of its Kaduna State chapter, who alleged that Mallam Nasir Elrufai, former Governor of Kaduna State, is not recognized as a member of the party. The denial was issued by the SDP Arewa Youth Mobilization Movement, which dismissed reports circulating in media outlets such as Punch, questioning Elrufai’s membership.

Elrufai, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the SDP, has garnered widespread support and solidarity since his departure from his former party. However, reports suggesting internal divisions within the SDP over his membership have been causing a stir in political circles.

Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, the National Chairman of the SDP, vehemently condemned the rumors, calling them “false” and “misleading.” Gabam clarified that the party’s national leadership was unaware of any such claims circulating within its Kaduna chapter and urged the public to disregard the reports.

The SDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC) have also dismissed claims made by one Idris Inuwa, who purportedly introduced himself as the Assistant National Secretary for the Northwest zone of the party. Gabam challenged Inuwa to present valid proof of his election as Assistant National Secretary, along with certification documents from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to substantiate his claims.

Additionally, the SDP leadership is aware of an alleged attempt by elements within the APC-led administration in Kaduna to disrupt the party’s unity. Reports suggest that certain individuals claiming to be members of the SDP were invited and financially supported to destabilize the party as part of an ongoing campaign to undermine its progress.

Gabam warned that these baseless allegations were part of a larger plot to destabilize the SDP ahead of the 2027 general elections. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the unity and strength of the party against efforts to weaken it through internal strife and media manipulation.

“The general public should be cautious of such tactics designed to distract and divide our party. There is no leadership crisis within the SDP. Mallam Nasir Elrufai is a respected member of our party, and we stand united in our vision for a better Nigeria,” Gabam said in a statement.

Political analysts have suggested that the ongoing disputes within opposition parties, including the controversy over Elrufai’s membership, are part of a larger strategy orchestrated by figures within the APC. According to these analysts, these internal conflicts are being used to destabilize opposition parties in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.

“This manipulation of internal party affairs is a deliberate attempt to discredit opposition parties and distract them from their focus on the upcoming election,” said a political analyst who wished to remain anonymous.

Despite these challenges, the SDP remains resolute in its commitment to unity and progress. The party has called on its members and the public to continue their support as it works towards a stronger political future. Gabam reaffirmed that the party will take all necessary steps to protect its integrity and ensure its success in national development and governance.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the SDP’s leadership, under Gabam, remains focused on advancing the party’s agenda and combating efforts to tarnish its reputation.
