The family and relative of Fatima Alfa Umar have accused doctors and nurses of deliberate negligence over the death of their daughter penultimate week at Rashid shikoni, federal university teaching hospital as a result of Cesarean operation performed on her October 21, 2024.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Hajiya Fatima Widi Halo said they “will not take it lightly to allow things like this to go free” because they were “among the people advocating women to go to hospital for a healthy delivery“. Sadly, ‘things are worsening in various hospitals where women are facing serious challenges from the health workers across Jigawa state“.
Fatima Widi, was the former commissioner of women affairs and one time broadcaster who worked with Radio Jigawa. She said it was the negligence of nurses and doctors that lead to the death of their relative at the teaching hospital.
She added “if not for negligence how could it happened in a single day five other women with similar cases to meet their untimely death all in a teaching hospital like Rashid shikoni?”.
She appealed to the Jigawa state governor Malam Umar Namadi to take drastic action to address the problem before it escalates to something else. She also referenced a hospital in Jahun where six persons reportedly died as a result of oxygen application.
Similarly, Fatima pointed to Dutse General hospital as having a worse situation. She recalled an experience were a woman reportedly delivered outside labor room due to harassment by nurses working at the labour room. This experience was confirmed by Amara Abdu, a resident of Gida. She indicated that her delivery was on the bear floor. She stated that she intentionally denied bed by the nurses on duty. She was forced to use her personal Hijab to clean the stain blood at the labour room. “If not for the support of one women at the hospital, she would may have died because she was almost naked, she was offered a wrapper to cover both her body and the baby”.
Meanwhile, a relative of the deceased added, that her daughter Fatima alfa died after serious bleeding which lead to her sudden dead and again she was on blood drip which she observed at that time the drip was not going well a situation which make her unhappy and quickly draw the attention of the nurses working at that period but after she left the hospital in the night she received a call from Mustapha Gwaram the husband of late Fatima reporting that Fatima has gone that citing two reasons ‘blood and drip’.
“From my personal experience, that there is no way a woman who did not deliver a baby by herself, who deliver two babies through operation to continue releasing blood and at the same time the drift injected to the late Fatima was reversing but due to negligence nobody cared to find out why until I observed and draw their attention of the authority”.
Responding on the accusation, the management of Rashid shikoni teaching hospital through the Doctor, Jibirin Abdullahi who did the operation to late Fatima confirmed to us that,
“That he did his work successfully and after the successful operation Fatima was taken to resting room where she was under the care of nurses with a condition for not to take any food unless the appropriate period given to her, but surprisingly, he received a call that Fatima was in a serious trauma while she was eating food, at the time he was on her bed Fatima was seriously in critical condition because she could not breath well that led to her death and I have nothing to do at the time”.
Therefore it is not our fault, it was the fault of those who gave her food to eat before the time we specified and blood they are complaining it is normal for any woman.
