63 Persons Involved in Accident in Anambra Police Checkpoint

At least two persons have died, while 9 others got injured in a multiple crash that occurred at a police checkpoint in Anambra on Friday.

According to a statement by the Ag. Sector Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State Command, DRC Margaret B. Onabe, the crash occurred along Ihialla-Onitsha Highway and affected six vehicles, while 63 people (compromising 52 male adults, 10 female adults, and 1 male child) were involved in the crash.

She said according to eyewitness account, an unidentified driver of an orange Mercedes 911 truck UWZ556XA, who was on speed while approaching a police checkpoint, lost control and rammed into vehicles on queue at Ken Maduako’s Oil and Gas Filling Station, before Azia Junction, and crashed.

She further explained that 1 male adult, and 1 male child died on the spot; while 9 people, compromising 5 male adults and 4 female, adults sustained varying degrees of injuries; with 52 others rescued unhurt.

She said, “FRSC rescue team from Ihiala Unit Command rushed the victims to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala, where a male adult and a male child was confirmed dead. The bodies of the dead victims were deposited at the hospital’s morgue.

“FRSC Rescue team on ground managed the traffic and ensured obstruction caused by the crash was removed.”

In his reaction, the State’s Sector Commander, CC Adeoye Irelewuyi commiserated with families of the dead victim and prayed for quick recovery of the injured victims.

He also warned motorists to avoid excessive speeding and to ensure they keep to the recommended speed limit.
