Community accuses Imo govt of land trespassing

Umuejechi Nekede community in Owerri West local government area of Imo State has raised alarm on the government’s several attempts to forcefully take their ancestral land.

The chairman of Umuejechi Central Assembly (UCA), Sir Samuel Ahamefule Achigbuo who spoke to our correspondent said that the former governor, Emeka Ihedioha was the one who implemented the court judgement that authenticated their ownership of the land.

According to him, “It was the High Court in the state who  that gave the judgement. The land is known as Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) located opposite ministry of Tourism (Nekede zoo).

“The land was earlier leased to Eastern Nigerian Government in 1956 solely for agricultural purpose for a period of three years.”

He said that the community would made to enforce the High Court order if the Governor, senator Hope Uzodinma continues to threaten them.

Meanwhile, indigenes of the community took to the streets of Nekede on Thursday protesting and warning the state government to steer clear of the community land.

Several phone calls put across to the state Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Physical Planning, Enyinnaya Onuegbu proved abortive as he could not pick up.
