Former governor of Imo State and Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has charged all the traditional rulers in Orlu Local Government, Imo State, to come together without delay, to ensure durable peace in the area and guard against a repeat of the ugly incident that led to loss of lives and property, the previous week.

Senator Okorocha gave the charge on Friday, February 4, 2021 when he visited the traditional ruler of Uzoubi Umuna Autonomous Community, HRM Eze Boniface Okereke who was also a victim of the unfortunate incident, in his Palace. Also met at the Eze’s Palace, were the Hausa Community, Indigenes of Niger Republic and the families of all those who were affected by the ugly development.

Okorocha regretted that Orlu, known as one of the most peaceful Local Government in the State in particular and the nation at large, could be in the news for the wrong reason, assuring that steps would be taken to ensure that such ugly incident does not happen again, in Orlu or in any other Local Government in the Senatorial District.

His words, “The ugly incident in Orlu that took the lives of innocent people was highly regrettable and Condemnable. The report I got was that some of our people and some Security Personnel lost their lives in the ugly incident. Among those affected were from Niger Republic. It is very painful. Very unfortunate because life is Sacred and any situation that would lead to loss of lives, should be guarded against.

He Continued “We pray that this must stop. We are all human beings. As people from other areas, including those from Niger Republic are here doing their business, our people are in their places equally doing their business. Nigeria is going through Security Challenges. And steps must be taken to ensure that such Challenges do not escalate.

“I appeal for calm and for peace among all the people in Orlu, not minding where they come from. What shocked me was that Orlu that had remained peaceful was involved in the trouble. I pray that God would give the families of all those who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident the heart to bear the losses.

“What shocked me in the Orlu Case was that, Orlu was not known for trouble making. The incident in Orlu was very strange. It has become a Concern to all  of us. It must not happen again. It should not be allowed to repeat itself. Anger and acrimony cannot help our society. But peace and love for one another, can help us and help our society.

“I call on all the traditional rulers in Orlu, most of them very Prominent, to come together without further delay and take steps to ensure peaceful Co-existence, among all the people in the area and to also ensure that the development that caused the clash does not rear its ugly head again.

“I want to announce the setting up of 7-man Committee to be headed by the immediate Past Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University, Professor Adaobi Obasi. The Presidents-General of the two Communities mostly affected by the incident are members of the Committee.

“The Committee, among other functions, would manage the Cash I have made available and other palliatives that would also be available, to ensure that the affected families benefit. The Committee would also reconcile all those affected by the development.

“I have also given Scholarship to the five Children who lost their mother in the incident, and the Children of the man who also lost his life. The boy who sustained serious injury would also enjoy the Scholarship.

“The letter submitted by the traditional ruler, Eze Okereke over the humiliation he suffered in the hands of Security Personnel, would also be sent to the authorities”, he Stated.
