A former deputy speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Uzo Azubuike has accused the member representing Aba federal constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Ossy Prestige, of causing flooding of Garden Avenue, Aba, through contracting an incompetent company
Azubuike , who is the PDP candidate for the constituency in the 2019 election, lamented that the shoddy work done on Garden Avenue by the firm contracted by Prestige had caused untold suffering to the residents as residents now live in fear whenever it rains.
Azubuike, now the PDP flag bearer for the constituency in the 2019 election, accused Prestige of failing to attract development projects to the constituency and insisted that he recorded more achievements within the same period than his successor.
“Ossy Prestige has caused untold suffering to residents of Garden Avenue as a result of shoddy work done by the construction company he contracted. You can go and see it. He said the company he contracted was using torchlight to work at night. Residents of Garden Avenue are now suffering due to the shoddy work which has brought flood to the area. The flood even killed 6 year old boy. I read Ossy Prestige in one of the national dailies where he said it was the worst job he has ever seen in his life. It was supposed to be 2 kilometers road, but the contractor did 500 meters without drainage and stone base. Any time, it rains, the place is always flooded, and residents now live in fear. But there was no problem of flood before the work was done. How can a representative bring such suffering to his constituents?
“If you look at the proposals he has been putting in the annual budget, it is all about training and training. Every year, each member of the House of Representatives from Abia has a budgetary envelope of N150 million. It is not money, but the value of the impact you are expected to make in that budget which is domiciled in agencies. What has Prestige done with it? Nothing.
“If he had succeeded in building roads in Aba, it will be a good one for all of us. But to my greatest surprise after close to four years, Hon. Prestige has nothing to show or boast of and no excuse at all. I brought in not less than 300 tricycles. The only empowerment Prestige did was the one he did in 2016 of which was my budget proposal of 2015. I have the budget of the National Assembly from 2016, 2017, 2018 and I’m waiting for the one of 2019.
He challenged the lawmaker to a debate on how he has been managing the affairs of the constituency since 2015, and insisted that the voice of the Aba people were better heard during his tenure from 2011 to 2015.
“At the appropriate time, I will publish my achievements at the House of Representatives so that people will compare it with the man representing us today. I have never engaged him in any discussion, but it is time to do that. You cannot tell us what you will do in future without accounting for present and past. I challenge him to debate.”
