Boko Haram launches deadly attack on Maiduguri
There is panic in Maiduguri on Thursday evening as Boko Haram insurgents launched deadly attacks from various directions in a bid to sneak into the city.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that horrifying sounds of explosions and endless gunshots were heard in the town, causing panic and stampede.
Sources said the insurgents launched the onslaught from three axis of Aliramti Jiddari-Polo, Giwa and Molai general area.
The incident started with heavy bomb explosions, follwed by artillery gunfire.
Few minutes later, rapid gunfire was heard after several military vehicles were mobilised to the affected areas.
It was also observed that residents living around the affected areas have deserted their homes, with thousands running toward GRA area.
However, the Nigerian Army urged residents not to panic as the situation has been brought under control.
This was contained in a brief statement issued by spokesman of 7 Diviision of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Kingsley Samuel.
“The general public is please requested not to panic and discountenance rumours of Boko Haram presence,” Mr Samuel, a colonel, said.
“You are further enjoined to please remain at home and be vigilant. The security situation in Maiduguri is under control.”
