Fulani Killings: Obasanjo Visits Gravesite Of 73 In Benue
–
The former President of the federal republic of Nigeria, General Olusegun Obasanjo has paid a graveside visit to the 73 persons, killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen. This visit came on Saturday March 10, 2018.
The former president was received by the governor of the Benue state, Samuel Ortom alongside members of the executive cabinet.
The visit by the former President comes as the President of the federation, General Mohammadu Buhari prepped to visit the State – many weeks after the slaughter of the 73 innocent citizens by the marauding Fulani herdsmen.
President Buhari had stayed away from visiting the State following the massacre. This was while visiting other States where cows belonging to Fulani Herdsmen were killed after intrusion into farmlands belonging to natives. The President had rushed a visit to Zamfara State following the reported deaths of cows. He repeated the same action in Nasarawa State.
But the President recently began a cross country tour of the States bereaved owing to Fulani herdsmen action. Among the states lined up in the tour is Benue State.
President Buhari, as a result has told the Governor of Benue State to postpone the previously scheduled mass burial of new victims of continued Fulani herdsmen attacks. The President was said to have made the request through a letter. Gov. Ortom agreed and rescheduled the mass burial.
Gov. Ortom had originally scheduled a mass funeral for about 25 new victims who died at the hands of Fulani herdsmen. The burial will hold next week.
Buhari is yet to visit.
