The Police in Aba, Abia State, have shot dead a member of armed robbery gang who has been terrorizing residents of St Paul’s area in the city.
The late robber, identified as Roland Davidson Iweka, who hails from Ogba /Egbema/Ndoni local government area of Rivers State, sustained bullet wounds when his gang engaged the Police in a gun battle, but died before he could receive medical attention.
The gang had shot dead a resident of Nwaguru Street, along St. Paul’s area, identified as Abraham Willy, and injured two students of Abia State Polytechnic; Okoro Peter and Ifeanyi Ijeoma; and dispossessed others of cash and assorted valuables.
It was gathered that the Police Area Commander in Aba, ACP Peter Wagbara who was alerted to a distress call from the residents, mobilized his men who went after the gang. On sighting the Police, the robbers opened fire, but were overpowered as Iweka was injured while other members of his gang escaped.
Rrecovered from the gang include N22,000, assorted phones, one HP Laptop, one DVD player, one Pump action rifle,9 tins of peak milk, 2 ladies handbags containing female properties and 3 expended cartridges.
It was further gathered that the injured students are now receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital, while corpse of the late Willy has been deposited at the morgue in the city.
When contacted, Abia state Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), ASP Ogbonnaya Nta, who confirmed the incident, described it as a new dawn in crime fighting in the State and urged the public to assist Police with useful information about criminals in their areas.
