Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has said that his planned address to the U.S. Congress on Iran’s nuclear programme was not intended as a sign of disrespect to President Barack Obama.

Netanyahu said this when he addressed the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, Washington DC, a think tank

Reports say the speech has caused a public rift between the two leaders.

“The speech is instead intended to speak up about a potential deal with Iran that could threaten the existence of Israel.

“I have a moral obligation to speak up in the face of these dangers while there is still time to avert them,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu pointed to the strong alliance between the U.S. and Israel and explained that it would not be in Israel’s interests for the alliance to become a partisan issue in the U.S.
