Supporters of former Malian President, Amadou Toumani Touré have called for his return to the country at a meeting in the presence of journalists in Bamako on Saturday. The meeting marked the start of a campaign in Mali and within the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) the organizers said, adding that they are employing “legal meansâ€ to achieve their goals.
One of the organizers, Amadou Koà¯ta explained that former President Amadou Toumani Touré cannot be called a “political refugeeâ€ after leaving the country upon the request of West African community leaders.
“We cannot understand that and no one can blame Amadou Toumani Toure and allow those who have blood on their hands to remain in our Chamber and prevent him from being there, he added.
Touré has been living in Dakar, Senegal since he was ousted in March 2012.
Those who ousted him accused him of having destroyed the national defense system and left the north regions at the mercy of armed groups.
Following these accusations, the new President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita’s government had preferred charges against him.
