Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets on Wednesday in Niamey lost 0-1 to the Amajimbos of South Africa in the first semi-final match of the African Under-17 Championship in Niger Republic.

According to a report on CAF website, striker Khanyisa Mayo’s low shot inside the penalty box in the 26th minute gave the Amajimbos all they needed to humble the world champions.

The Nigerian side however rallied in the second half, hitting the woodwork twice and drawing at least two good saves from South African goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto.

Eaglets poured forward in search of an equaliser, but Mpoto saved well from Chukwueze Samuel.

His runs and exciting dribbling skills kept the South African backline on their heels throughout the match.

Striker Victor Osimeh effort in the 87th minute proved abortive as Ntuthuko Mbatha thwarted his effort.

It is the first match the Eaglets were losing and in which they failed to score since the tournament began on Feb. 15.

In the group stage, the Eaglets had victories over hosts Niger Republic and Zambia, 2-0 and 3-1 respectively, and a 1-1 draw against Guinea.

The Eaglets will now have to wait till Thursday to know their opponent in the third place match on Sunday.

Mali and Guniea lock horns on Thursday in the second semi-final match of the championship.

The tournament is expected to end on Sunday, with South Africa facing the winner of Thursday’s match.
