As the remains of the late Catholic Bishop Emeritus of Awka, Most Reverend Simon Akwali Okafor were committed to earth Tuesday, Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano extolled the late Bishop, describing him as an extra-ordinary man, used by God as an instrument to bless Christians and the entire mankind.
Speaking at the funeral mass for the deceased at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral Awka, shortly before he was laid to rest, governor Obiano observed that Ndi Anambra were united in grief as they mourned this great loss.
Governor Obiano who led other distinguished citizens to pay tribute to the renowned Bishop whose Education Foundation trains the poorest and brightest in the society, noted that as a teacher, the late Bishop Okafor nurtured and moulded many children and youth to become responsible and productive citizens and as a priest and Bishop, worked diligently in shepherding the flock and winning souls for Christ.
“The late Bishop Okafor occupies a special place in our hearts for good reasons; he was practical, humane and friendly”, the governor remarked.
According to him, the late Bishop left an enduring legacy of excellence that the Catholic community and the people of the State would ever remain proud of. He called on others to emulate him.
Also speaking, the Catholic Arch-Bishop of Onitsha, Most Reverend Valerian Okeke shared a similar view, emphasizing that the late Bishop left a legacy for which he would be remembered and thanked everybody that contributed in giving him a befitting burial.
In his reaction, the Chairman, Anaocha Local Government Area, Mr. Ikeobi Ejiofor pointed out that the late Bishop laid a strong foundation for the growth and development of Awka Diocese.
Ejiofor enjoined younger priests to follow his footsteps to further uplift and strengthen the Church.
Also speaking, a Catholic faithful, Prince Chuma Okolo recalled the selfless service and dedication of the late Bishop to the Diocese and his exemplary as well as his conduct and prayed God to give the family the fortitude to bear the loss and give his soul a peaceful repose.
