The Imo state police command
yesterday said the attack on the Senate President, Chief David Mark’s convoy
last Thursday did not occur in the state.
The senate president had on
Friday told the congregation at the SS John and Peter Anglican Cathedral
Nkwerre, Orlu Diocese during the funeral service of late business mogul, Sir
John Richard Anyaehie, that his convoy was attacked on Thursday while they were
coming for the burial.
But speaking with 247ureports.com on telephone, the state
Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Joy Elemoko said the police
investigation showed that no such attack occurred in the state.
She suggested it might have
occurred elsewhere but not in the state.
Since the report of the
attack filtered in, it has sent tongues wagging as to who could have carried
out that attack, with suggestions by some people in the state that the attack
must have been carried out by some pro-Biafran groups.
According to the co-publisher
of the state-based newspaper, Nigeria Newspoint, Mr. Gele Agbai, it was
surprising that such an attack could happen to the number three citizen of Nigeria,
because Imo was not known to exhibit such level of violence.
He called on the state
government and the police to carry out more investigation on the matter with a
view to bringing the culprits to book.
Speaking on the condition of
anonymity, another person who spoke with 247ureports.com, said it was possible the attack happened in the state. According to
him, this could one of the reasons the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, sometime
ago raised an alarm over the infiltration of Boko Haram insurgents in the.
The PDP had raised an alarm
two months ago that the state government had camped members of the terrorist
group at the Imo State College of Advanced Professional Studies, ICAPS, to
hound down political opponents in the wake of 2015 elections in the state, an
alarm the state government and the state police command denied.
