IFEANYI EZUGWU,ENUGU.
A group, under the auspices of Agwu Peoples Assembly has vowed to resist attempts by Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State to foreclose Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s chances of returning to the senate come 2015.
The Group’s insistence is coming on the heels of the declaration made on 29th May, 2013 by the governor that all those who have served two terms at the upper and lower houses of the national assembly should jettison the idea of contesting come 2015.
But while frowning at the governor’s decision over the weekend during a press briefing, the Chairman, Committee on Enlightenment, Awgu Peoples Assembly, Chief Peter Okeke, said,”Senator Ike Ekweremadu, performed creditably well in his representation since he went on our behalf to the National Assembly.
” Ekweremadu has made tremendous impact in the infrastructural development of our zone through his numerous constituency projects. Virtually all the communities in the five LGAs that make up Enugu-West have benefited from the senator’s huge drive towards infrastructural development. Most of these projects have been completed while others are at various advanced stages of completion.
“Apart from the huge infrastructural development, Senator Ekweremadu has impacted positively on the lives of vast majority of his constituents through his all-inclusive and sustained human capital development and philanthropy. His kindness and humility have gone beyond Enugu-West
“He is a peacemaker, bridge builder and humane politician who takes the down-trodden to heart and feels their pain. He has shown that senatorial representation is not about showmanship but rather development and peace-building even in the face of obvious provocation.
“His open and transparent leadership and representation are unparalleled and worthy of emulation. His sterling leadership have benefitted the nation tremendously through sponsoring of quality bills and motions; successful amendment of the 1999 constitution and his great roles in the repositioning of the ECOWAS Parliament and the ECOWAS sub-region at large.
“We unreservedly, wholeheartedly support Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his unrelenting development programmes for our senatorial zone and therefore urge him to re-contest the senatorial seat in the forthcoming general election.
” We condemn and will continue to condemn, in its entirety, the ignoble and shameful attempts by an insignificant number of political miscreants in Awgu LGA to demean and ridicule the person and office of Senator Ike Ekweremadu. Such people have tried unsuccessfully to create the hideous and odious impression that Enugu-West senatorial seat is up for grabs. This is absolute lie”.
