An attempt by some members of the Anambra state House of Assembly to
praise sing the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) for
“a job well-done”, in the way and manner it conducted the Nov 16
governorship election in the state ran into troubled waters as members
got sharply divided over the motion.
One Obinna Emenaka, representing Anambra East constituency had in a
motion requested for the commendation of the House to INEC for a job
well done during the governorship election which according to him “has
become the best in the political history of the country”.
He pointed out that the INEC should be singled out for the mature way
it conducted its business during the November 16 election in spite of
the monumental pressure that preceded the poll.
The apparently ill-conceived motion instantly threw the floor into a
rowdy session, as tempers rose immediately and Ebele Obi from Idemili
South constituency stoutly opposed the motion on the ground that some
political parties shall drag the election umpire before the
election petition tribunal for what he called shoddy job and abysmal
performance it put up in Anambra state.
He pointed out that his party All Progressives Congress was far from
being satisfied with the electoral body which was allegedly biased in
the election.
It took the mature handling of the Speaker Chinwe Nwebili to calm the
tensed atmosphere.
