Ten months after the death of former governor of Kaduna State, Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa in a plane crash last year in Bayelsa state. The umbrella organization of Southern Kaduna people, Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) yesterday stated that it is its turn to produce governor in 2015.

The national president of the union, Dr. Ephraim Goje said in Kaduna while addressing newsmen after a meeting, he added that the ministerial nominee from the state, following removal of former Minister of Environment, Hajiya Hadiza Mailafiya should also come from their area, since Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero hailed from Northern Kaduna.

Goje said, “Late Governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa stayed in the office for two and half years, and as I have been saying, democracy will be 16 years in Kaduna State by 2015, and out of these periods, Southern Kaduna people have only enjoyed two years, that was the short period Yakowa was in office as the governor. Before then, we have been asking for equity and fairness in terms of governance, we have been asking of power shift to the southern part of Kaduna State because what is good for the geese is good for the gander.

“We should have opportunity to be in governance for a period reasonably enough that is applicable to other geo-political zones, so we are saying that our interest by 2015 we want power in southern Kaduna, we want power shift to southern Kaduna, and we are standing on this. Local government chairmen may take their position, on which the next governor should be, but this is what the people are thinking that we should be given a chance, and we should be supported.

People from all over the state should support us to realize this dream that the mandate Yakowa had should be allowed to be completed, and we should equally be given the opportunity to be in governance, just as the Northern and central zones held power for the past 14 or so years. Power should be rotational.

“On the ministerial slot, he said, “If you look at the political arrangement before Yakowa’s death, wherever zone the governor comes from, the minister’s position goes to the other side. So Mailafia became the minister because Yakowa as the governor came from southern senatorial zone. Now that Yakowa is dead, Yero is now the governor from northern zone where Mailafia comes from.”
