Reckless shooting: Court Orders Community To Pay N150,000, Take Care of Injured

The Chief Magistrate Court in Atani in Ogbaru LGA presided over by Magistrate E.D.Offor on Friday ordered Okpoko community leaders to pay N150,000 for the injure inflicted on Mr Emmanuel Idor (20) by Okpoko Vigilante Services.
It would be recalled that Mr Emmanuel Edor was allegedly gunned down in the back by a member of Okpoko Vigilante Group, Mr Ebuka Uzoma, after the he was spotted in the late hours of Dec. 19, without any evidence of robbery.
The prosecuting counsel, Inspector Ben Ogbodo told the court that police investigation revealed that Edor was innocent and was just returning to his home in Okpoko community that evening before the unfortunate incident.
“We have concluded our investigation, there is no crime on that fateful day as also collaborated by people living in the neighbourhood; while Idor had not been known for crime activities or living a careless life,’’ Ogbodo said.
Mr Godwin Enoch, counsel to the accused, said that Mr Ebuka Uzoma, a security-man in Okpoko community shot Edor in an error.
“We have admitted to our fault and even given his brother N200,000 to treatment of the injured as well as taking care of minor needs the growing young-man,’’ Enoch said.
Ruling, Offor condemned the unprofessional approach of the vigilante services as well as their abandonment of the boy that could easy be their child.
“I hereby order Okpoko community to release N150,000 to victim’s brother to enable him to transport his brother to Nnewi Teaching Hospital and also pay for the hospital bills.
“This order should be carried out on or before the next adjourned date,’’ she said.
The magistrate, however, adjourned the case to August 6 for further hearing.
Meanwhile, Dede Uzor A. Uzor, Chairman of Campaign for Democracy (CD), frowned at the inability of community leadership to pay and take proper care of the dying young lad.
“In turn this is violating the order of the court and denying Edor his Fundamental Human Rights as enshrined in our constitution,’’ Uzor said.
