Imo State Government Shuts Down, Police Fear Violence

Information available to 247ureports.com indicates that the State of Imo may be engulfed in latent and present crisis in the labor environment. This is as the civil/ public service abruptly declared strike two days ago under the auspices of the ‘Joint negotiating Council’. The NLC & TUC have stated that they are not in support of the strike and Gov Okorocha, on his part, has banned the said Union. Nonetheless, the Imo State secretariat has remained locked up for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday [today].  

According to a top ranking member of the Imo State civil service, the situation appears to dicey and volatile to properly decipher that is going on. “In fact the situation here is very pitiable and dicey. Nobody is cocksure of the state of affairs”, said the source who continued to add that the secretariat may have been locked up to avert the onset of a predicated violent situation. “I am told that it is to avoid violent upsurge from a section of the workers who are violent.

But a top official of the controversial joint negotiating council who spoke to 247ureports.com on the telephone that it was his group that was responsible for locking the gate – and that they will fight any attempt to unlock it.

Some workers who are afraid of being sack if they fail to turn up for work were seen hanging around the gated entrance of the Secretariat. Fully armed mobile police men were also seen standing at the entrance to the secretariat.

In talking to a trusted ally of the Okorocha administration, he acknowledged that there appear a situation unfolding at the secretariat but assured that the strike situation will be resolved before Friday.
